Roma are ready to make a £12.9m offer to Manchester United for Chris Smalling, 29, after the defender's impressive start to his loan spell at the Serie A club. (Guardian)

Not a lot of money by present day standards for a very experienced English CB... Worth a bid?

12.9m to Roma... 25m to any PL team. Plus Even though he’s fast, he’s Also gash.

Which makes him turbo gash.

He is woeful but so are we, it's a match made in heaven.
Seriously though, he's poor but I have no idea who else would dare to sign for us the state we are in

Rather have no depth than spend actual cash on a 29 year old who isn't a top level player

The problem is centre half is a critical position, Mina has been injury prone in the past, Keane is off form, Holgate unproven and after that we are into untested youngsters and moving players from other positions. It could prove disastrous if injuries strike.

I rate Smalling better than Keane and crucially he has pace, so whilst he's probably not the long term answer, he could make a difference in the short term and be a decent alternative/rotation optin in the medium. Which for the money quoted seems like value.

Still, hopefully Brands can find younger and better.

We aren't good right now and spending resources on someone who will not make us much better and won't be a long term player here is not worthwhile. As I said I'd rather we be stuck with Holgate and Keane than waste 12m on 29 year old bang average players. That's panicking and shortsighted and we don't need to do it.

I hope you're right.

We would be better loaning a center back and striker at least they have incentive to earn a contract and we aren't under obligation.
