Thing is this is how it should work:

Owner/board > DoF > HoR/manager

Owner and board tell the DoF the overall aims of the club and then leave it to the DoF to implement that strategy across the club. Including recruitment policy.

The manager and HoR, under the direction of the DoF, go about implementing a coaching/management style and then scouting and ultimately deciding on players.

I keep banging on about it but for me Thelwell's biggest failing was not having a HoR in place for the summer. He's trying to act like a DoF should, and that's good. But if you've not got that crucial position filled then you're making a rod for your own back.

Apparently the job has been accepted by the candidate they wanted, yet that happened 10 months into his time as DoF and it still hasn't officially been announced, as the person hasn't yet started. So as it stands, Thelwell has to take the brunt for recruitment. Lampard can take his blame for insisting he prefers English players/PL experience and Thelwell can take the blame for not being able to come up with better than he did.
Without wanting to defend him too much, for an important senior position it can sometimes take months to get the right person in whether that's in football or any other business. The search for the right person can take time, maybe you have someone in mind and you talk to them and then they turn it down etc etc

If its a short term fix, with a hard and fast injury clause in the loan deal that gets us a good few goals then no issue with it all overall, my issue is the bells that do these contracts etc wont have clauses as we are clearly seeing with the likes of Kean, maybe even the Alli loan, and many many others, we do it our way, set the bar then everybody laughs and says what did Everton do! Bet we didnt even get a sell on clause for Richy!!

We have some bad bad meffs at the top table.

but juve and besiktas wanted to send them back to us and couldnt which was surely good work by whoever done them deals?

Nah he's done it more than that to be fair (not breaking it down into exact figures but at that kind of rate at least). He's basically doing it this season. On a permanent deal i'd have major reservations but he is the type of player who could score at that sort of rate and keep us up this year.
Yes, but I thought the discussion was on the basis of a permanent deal, because Villa have turned down a loan. On loan you take him no problems. You just don’t offer a permanent 125k a week contract.

It can mate, I understand that. But... it's two majorly key transfer windows that they haven't had a head of recruitment in place for.

It should have been the first person through the door last year after Thelwell. It didn't matter whether we went down or not, we'd still need a good HoR in place.

Hopefully we have gone away from bringing players in that are expensive and add nothing to the squad. I think it will be loan deals or maybe a signing if Holgate,Davies,Mina, Keane, Kean, Doucoure and/or others leave.

As others have said already I don't see Gordon or Pickford leave in this window as the cost of relegation would be far greater than any additional fee we would get for selling six monthe earlier.
See McNeil and Maupay

People moaning about ings when we've had to watch DCL and maupay tryna play footy this season.

He'd be the only person in the squad you would feel comfortable with taking a chance.

Moving forward is he the type of player we should be looking at? Absolutely not

Right now though...bottom 3, can't score goals, is he the type of signing needed to stay in this league? Absolutely.

DCL and maupay will relegate us, pair of donkeys

May as well of left simms at Sunderland then, 2 perfectly ready championship strikers just in time for next season.
Add Brererton Diaz to that and we'll be tearing it up !!
I'm not quite sure if this is sarcastic, just a bit of fun or a response against my viewpoint.

I didnt say Simms should have been recalled like

I do not think we have any funds to make any signings. We have to sell and offer player exchange.

Cannot see us getting any of the mooted strikers.
