McNeil was a crap signing, let’s be honest.
It's a weird one because he was bought like we already had blistering pace in the team and just needed a squad player who could rotate and develop. Same with Maupay to extents weird because we didn't have first teamers up to level yet bought these average players they were clearly a panic signing in Maupay and we could get Mcneil for cheaper up front than Dennis or Cornet we looked at. But the crippling lack of threat and pace in the team and a limited budget means they were bizarre buys.

they were panic buys. Lampard should not have agreed to either.

I don’t think he’s been very good but like I said it’s not like we’re giving him much of a chance playing like we are. He’ll look better under a new manager, again for £15m total it’s absolutely nothing these days, especially considering he’s still only 22.

No where near as bad a signing as people try to make out, I could name probably at least 10 we’ve made before I’d get remotely close to him.

That’s nonsense. All strikers miss chances. Did Brighton create more chances for him, yeah of course but it’s not like he was getting 10 shots on target every game. I’m not saying he’s a clinical striker, I’m not even saying he’s great, all I’m saying is we obviously didn’t play to his strengths at all, in fact we basically played to his weaknesses and were somehow shocked that it wasn’t working.
You may be right, I don't think you are, but you may be. In which case we shouldn't have even looked at him as an option. If he didn't have the skill set we needed for our set up then it was a failing in recruitment. We don't have the players to play a style that suits him, so whether he is crap or misused is moot. He's not going to score here without wholesale changes to the squad, so he was a waste of money. Sad thing is he was a panic buy, everyone at the club, other than Maupay himself obviously, knew that right from the off.

I sort of agree with what you’re saying that we shouldn’t have bought him if we weren’t gonna play to his strengths and that he was sort of a panic but but at the same time I do think we have a group of players that “could” play that style and it’s something we as fans would love too. I also think that style was probably an idea for Lampard to play but he couldn’t figure it out and reverted back to type when it wasn’t going well back to the slow, defensive, lump the ball mindset.

I think Bielsa for example since he’s been linked would have Maupay looking like a complete different player for us because he’ll play a style that’ll suit him much more, even when Calvert Lewin is fit.

he's played in pretty much all of our games.

He is just really, really poor.

£15m is a lot when you're skint.

Or when Kenwright had Haaland about to sign... or Diaz... or all the other deals that were never happening in a million years except in fans imaginations.
Right well.

For one, Haaland had a trial. That was it. In like 2016 or 2017. They could have signed him but decided against it. Nothing about BK. It would have been an academy decision.

Diaz completed a medical in Colombia in anticipation of a move going through but it always depended on James going to Porto. That broke down. It happens.

Nothing about imagination. Those things happened.

Broja, Che Adams, Guirassy. All extensively scouted. Lampard wanted one of the first two, if not both. Should probably have gone for Guirassy as it was an easy deal. They looked at Moffi etc.

How those players, who all have similar attributes, were missed out on and then they ended up with a slow midget is beyond me.

FWIW Maupay consistently underperformed his xG for Brighton - he was missing good chances - but he was getting more chances than he has done here, that's for sure.

He's a decent link forward. That's it. That Lampard thought he would get use out of him probably means he thought he could get a style implemented but he never managed.

Gabriel had a medical in December just before COVID... Then left to arsenal.

Giroud was all but done supposedly.. a little like today's story

My issue with Maupay is that he can only be used when DCL is off the field. While that occurs way too much, they needed a forward that could pair with Calvert-Lewin. Spending real money on subs when your lineup sucks is never a winning plan.
