January Transfer Window 2023

Broja, Che Adams, Guirassy. All extensively scouted. Lampard wanted one of the first two, if not both. Should probably have gone for Guirassy as it was an easy deal. They looked at Moffi etc.

How those players, who all have similar attributes, were missed out on and then they ended up with a slow midget is beyond me.

FWIW Maupay consistently underperformed his xG for Brighton - he was missing good chances - but he was getting more chances than he has done here, that's for sure.

He's a decent link forward. That's it. That Lampard thought he would get use out of him probably means he thought he could get a style implemented but he never managed.

Heard anything on who weve been scouting recently or any were keen on this window?

Gabriel had a medical in December just before COVID... Then left to arsenal.

Giroud was all but done supposedly.. a little like today's story
Not sure whether it was as early as December, think it was more like Feb time IIRC but yes he was lined up. Lille changed the goalposts after the pandemic.

Giroud - wasn't that something like his wife didn't want to leave London? That's what Koeman said, at least.

I don't think any of them have ever quite been Danjuma level, though.

No mate I'm not that clued up!

Though today was Marcus Edwards from Sporting when I was making a call to try and back up the Danjuma stuff. Person I got it from though, they're based in London media, met them at the World Cup - not sure how much they'd know.

They just said we'd been in touch with his agent.

What's your view on Tedesco mr Red Bull?

Genuinely never watched enough of them or Schalke under him to judge fully, but whenever I did, they were rubbish.

Erm well he’s a possession manager for starters, so not sure how that would work here. He starts bright and soon fades. Won their first ever major trophy and went on a wicked unbeaten run when he joined but even before the cup final the football was horrendous. Probs find a load of quotes of mine complaining at the time. The football is SO boring and only successful because some of the players are amazing. I just don’t know what he’d do with this squad. Also doesn’t really have many Plan B’s during a game. Flat out refuses to use some players who he needs too.

Well I'm happy to take your word for it.

Seen some of the nerds wanting him but honestly from what I'd seen - but it is very little - I wasn't really getting the shouts.

I swear this number grows every time it’s repeated. I’ll be slaughtered again for saying this but in isolation those two were not bad signings at all, they’ve just not worked out and part of that is how they’ve been utilised.

Maupay doesn’t go from a roughly 1 in 3 striker everywhere else he’s been to a crap striker here, fair enough McNeil hasn’t been good enough and hasn’t shown much but he’s young, may still improve and the way we structured the deal we paid nothing, at the moment at least.

Lampard tried to use Maupay as a Calvert Lewin replacement, instead of an alternative, we didn’t adjust at all to playing with a striker a foot smaller than our usual one, going with this McNeil who’s used to playing with a big grock up top at Burnley had to adjust playing a system like that but with a 5ft nothing striker. It was never gonna work out if that’s how we were planning to utilise them.

£27m (the actual fees) in total for 2 players is nothing in this day and age, the problem was they were in essence seen as Richarlison and Calvert Lewin’s replacements, it’s not their fault that they were the only players brought in.

Both were bought in as squad depth signings, McNeil as third choice winger, Maupay as second choice striker. Maupay played so much because the first choice was made of cheese and McNeil played because our first choice pairing of wingers a mix of a £1.5m player and an apparent £50m player were utter crap and don’t produce.

I think Maupay’s problem is very self evident and a different manager will easily get more out of him but to those that give abuse to McNeil I’ll just ask one thing, there’s a player we’re about to sell for £50m, roughly the same age, roughly the same output, also can’t nail down a starting spot in this dreadful side.

Now if you look at Gordon and McNeil and say there’s a £35m difference between them I’ll gladly call you a liar, so with that being said considering we got McNeil for £15m with just only about £3m up front I’ll ask 2 questions,

What can you expect from a player so cheap?

Why can’t he just be seen for what he is, a squad player who was implemented badly in a bad system, instead of trying to make out like he’s the worst player in the world as like I said he’s played a part in keeping that apparent £50m player out of the team at points.

Look when it comes down to it we were on a knife edge of being relegated last season. We sold our best player (probably because we had to) and spent the money on reinforcements who've left us with a weaker team.

19th position, 3 wins and heading towards relegation without a fight! We need competitive Premier League players not more dead wood. Look I know it's easy with hindsight and the Calvert Lewin injury didn't help. We probably should have bought 1 player of higher quality.

Don't get me wrong I pray they prove me wrong this season. I will jump for joy if they stop us from being relegated!!!!!

I think you might need to look at the transfer fees again, I thought they were signed for less than 30m

Still not exactly a good use of limited funds.

Footy players all over the gaff will now be like to their agents "If Everton ring tell them I"m not in"
Which is why we should have had players in early in the window instead they did nothing for week after week with the manager situation also, nothing proactive to arrest the slide until we get to this crisis point. The inaction is what could be what sends us down now again we are gambling on bringing in a good manager and forward or two who can deliver straight away in this league, with a week of a window left it's absolutely insane and you are scrambling through the dregs mostly, unless you have done extensive scouting which we do but can't /won't act on anyway and are now in such a bad position that players are put off coming because we have no manager and our future is in doubt in this league. It's a binfire and our owner chucks out a calm video telling us everything will be ok well frankly Mr Moshiri given your record of abject failure I do not believe you.
