Whatever be the case, we need to strengthen our midfield before defense during this january window, if we are allowed to.

Well my other team has a 20 and 18 year old as backup CB’s and they’re going for the league title and play CL knockout stages nearly every year.

Not often you get a 2nd chance in life but Everton's fortunes might just be turning around .

Yes , they now have the chance to re-sign Anwar El Ghazi as a free agent after Mainz terminated his contract for an anti-Semitic social media post.

What are you waiting for Kev ? lol

Honestly mate, it wasn't a trick question. I am all for signing / promoting young players, but I'm not sure having a 20 and 18 year old as our only defensive cover would be a wise move. I was hoping you could point out some clubs that have done it successfully so you could change my mind

As others have posted...but the key point is that if we went with Tarkowski and Branthwaite that would mean were starting a player who is 21 already so surely having a 3rd choice 20/21 isnt a big deal?

Then to have a 4th choice e.g 19 years old would put them 2 years behind Branthwaite and 1 year behind the 3rd choice.

If you look at it like that, wheres the negatives?

Need a cb ready to step in next season and then i would like take chance of another cb similar to chermitti. Holgate and godfrey will be gone at the end of the season hopefully, keane will stay on. I would like us to sign promising young players in each position but we also need player ready to start is a big risk having a young player as backup . With the squad getting smaller aswell an injury puts huge pressure on them.

If you pay money for a senior player to come in as 3rd choice it means they probably arent good enough as otherwise they would be starting...while an u21 may already be or become good enough to start very quickly.

Same goes for centre midfield as well...we have Onana and Garner in the middle, both 22. Why cant we have an u21 and an u19 behind them?

All seems perfectly logical to me.

I get your point, and as I said I am all for signing / progressing youth players.

But there is a world of difference between a starting 20 year old and relying on a back up 20 year old.

My question was - do many clubs do that? I wasn't aware of any but others have pointed out 2 moderately successful clubs that use that model, which is great. But if all we have is two clubs that are basically businesses rather than football clubs, is it really the best model?

Wouldn't it make more sense to do what 99% of clubs do and have one experienced back up and one younger player rather than 2 youth players? Especially if it is Takowski that gets injured/suspended rather than Branthwaite?
