Japan Earthquake/Tsunami

AFP reported today that there had been a run on Potassium Iodide tablets in Finland today.

Resulting in the Finland government stating no one should be taking those doses. The way the media are hysterically reporting things is to blame.

Finland is about 10,000 miles away from Japan. FFS.

Given that two hydrogen explosions have not compromised either of the two reactors says much about the containment vessels.

Also the degree of lack of understanding about radiation too.

All the radionucleotides being emitted Iodine for instance has a half life of 30 days! Caesium would be naturally excreted inside of 12 months from the human body - therefore doesn't bioaccumulate!

And most of what is has released aren't gamma or beta emitters they are alpha emitters meaning you have to either ingest or breath in the stuff and accumulate it (chronic, "long term" exposure) to have serious damage.

Sense of perspective on the nuclear issues - with "rent a comment" from dubious academics with agendas who don't publish peer review and are deliberately dubious in statements.

The US has been called in due to specialist and readily available/movable equipment that can help. No need to overstate it. Serious yes. Panic no.

Some in the media should stop the deliberate winding up of the general population.

Admiral intentions but seriously you'd be as welcome as a fart in a space suit unless you have the skills that are urgently needed.

I will say there are many organizations over here that are desperate for help maybe think about giving one of those your much valued free time?

I guess 2 years in the army is irrlevant in such search and rescue situation. I want to do something more than donation, which I've done.

You wouldn't be allowed in. You need permission (a permit) from the Japanese government and to get that you either need pres-accreditation or a permit i.e. be part of a defined humanitarian assistance group. Red Cross would be an example.

Seemingly.

You're making these words up!

transuranic
http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/transuranic?view=uk
adjective
Chemistry
(of an element) having a higher atomic number than uranium (92).

radionuclide
http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/radionuclide?view=get
noun
a radioactive nuclide.

I'll make things abit simpler for you DAVEK.

Well the Russians would have detected PLUTONIUM ... particularly from Reactor 3.

as would have the US carrier off the coast if that had of happened.

I can only respond by saying that the Japanese atomic energy experts have a poor record in matters of nuclearitomium and uranimococaidic testing at sites where safety scares have presented themselves. In fact, one independent expert in the field of hydrogenicilitis recently produced a peer reviewed paper doubting that atomizifictaion techniques were up to snuff in Nippon.

Just saying.

The IAEA are monitoring things and after the Chernobyl incident countries are obligated by international law to warn other countries of nuclear incidents, they are also obligated to give transparency in civilian nuclear programmes to the IAEA under the non-proliferation treaty.

Watch what the IAEA are saying. They're one agency who address the full UN security council!

Those two words you've made up.

Doesn't take much to do some testing lad. Get a plane with a ICP-OES and ICP-MS in the sky down wind and that would soon tell you what's going on.

The US navy has that sort of facility on board their carrier, I'd bet - for NBC threat assessment.

I just hope they carry out extensive nuclearitomium and uranimococaidic testing.
