Japan Earthquake/Tsunami

You cant say with any degree of certainty that no one from this country died from the effect of Chernobyl's radiocative cloud. The effects on other western European nations are well documented. Large parts of our land our still hazardous because of Chernobyl: http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2009/may/12/farmers-restricted-chernobyl-disaster

It's ridiculous to suggest that this could have happened with no loss of life.

List these areas that are still "hazardous" Davek.

It didn't say no one died. It said that 56 died directly and they estimated 4000 eventually. However none of those are in the UK. All were in Ukraine and Russia.

There's scientific evidence.

And then there's Davek's scientific evidence by dubious implication and innuendo. That's pseudo science!

EDIT. There has to be proportionality in responding to this type of thing.

Smoking and drinking is far far more likely to cause cancer than being exposed to low level radioactive material.

Now banned plasiticers in products too.

You shouldn't bow to hysteria Davek.

Strong earthquake aftershock of magnitude 6.0 shakes eastern Japan; buildings felt swaying in Tokyo - just up on BBC

The US Army has recommended that personnel and families at the base - and at the Atsugi air base - take precautions, says Reuters.

"These measures are strictly precautionary in nature. We do not expect that any United States federal radiation exposure limits will be exceeded even if no precautionary measures are taken."

The US military has detected low levels of radiation at its Yokosuka base, south of Tokyo, Reuters reports.

This is roughly the same as the US Navy's advice. Stay indoors.

That's serious.

Best for our friends in Japan (Teppic) to stay in doors.

Unless you're within 150miles of the plant, don't worry and get on with your lives.

"The authorities in the US and Canada have warned people there is need to rush to buy iodine tablets. Chemists along the western coast of North America have reported a soaring demand for the tablets, which prevent give the body sufficient iodine that is stops absorbing any externally which may be contaminated by radiation

Officials say there is no risk from radiation in that region at present, and warn people could be exposing themselves to other health dangers by needlessly taking iodine supplements."

They're about 3000 miles away in the US. They have nothing to worry about right now.

Its the spent fuel waste storage pond.

Its not the reactor its the pond next to it, and its been started by escaping hydrogen.

Its where the fire started yesterday and was extinguished.

"spent fuel rods in reactors five and six are also now believed to be heating up"

The insurance on that must be enormous.

Having been on recovery operation before, am watching the conditions on the ground.

Frankly they're horrendous. Its minus 7 there now and falling with snow.

Considering the disaster, the nuclear incidents and now the weather. I can honestly say I cannot think of any worse situation any country has faced in modern times.

This is a modern industrialised society almost brought to its knees.

And the humanitarian / military teams are facing a horrendous situation.

Away from the affected coastline and its hinterland - and with the exception of power cuts affecting the rest of Japan at irregular periods - how much is life in the rest of the country reflecting your statement that its on its knees? Kyoto, Osaka and other parts of western Japan are apparently operating as normal. Aren't you in danger here of concentrating on certain prefectures?

BTW, what recovery operations were you on?

They've suffered fuel and electricity shortages across Japan. The only reason they're not having blackouts is the Russians are giving them preferential rates on hydrocarbons and is talking about giving them 6000MW of electric a day.

And in relation to your final comment its none of your business.
