I suppose my point is, loaning players out doesn't really work very often.

Davies is a good point the other way. We could have loaned him out, and moved him on for a couple of million. Because we've played him regularly we will probably get £12-£15m.
I’ll believe the 12-15m when I see it. Be lucky to get half that for Davies.

A loan for Jarrad makes sense, but we can’t have only 3 first team cbs.

Depends on the type of loan. I don't think any of the premier league clubs generally use the loan system for young players particularly well apart from say Man United.

Spain and Germany don't really use it too often as they produce through their B teams playing competitive football. Additionally, there are more cash strapped sides in those leagues, so they will always give youth a chance and let them play.

Here's a decent article on what happened to Josh McEachran at Chelsea -

There doesn't seem any close contact with these players from academy to senior team that you get in Spain, Germany, or Holland. Hence why players disappear

I think the loan system is just an easy option for teams to avoid making a decision on a young player. Look, if it's a great loan for Brainthwaite and he plays regularly for Watford, thats one thing. However he could very easily force his way into our team.

We need to keep this lad. He will get plenty of chances next season. He looks like he is going to be a boss player. Keep him around Ancelotti, learning or send him to watford to get contrasting messages from the 5 different managers they have yearly and make him have to look at Deeney every morning when he is trying to eat his breakfast?

We need to show some humanity here.

If he is not going to get regular game time with us next season then it makes perfect sense for everybody involved for him to go on loan to Watford. Watford should be challenging for automatic promotion next season and he will get regular first team football (he will probably be their best centre back) it would be great for his development playing Championship football week in week out and I can't imagine that there will be any option to buy in the deal. If it means it brings down the Doucoure price then it makes sense for everybody involved.

Seen too many talented lads go out on loan and that's the last you'll ever see of them.

Think Branthwaite is different in a sense. He would benefit more from premier league coaching and playing the odd game and carling Cup matches. He doesn't need to improve physically really at all.

I get he needs games to make mistakes and develop, but a few bad games in the championship and that's that, he's another Pennington. He needs to be playing and training with the first team.

It's a sticky one because he's still very raw but he slotted in oh so calmly against Sheff United and did decent against Bournemouth, Feel like both sides (loan/stay) have very strong cases, I personally would keep as a back up but if we can get someone maybe a bit more experienced on loan like a Tomori then loaning is perfectly fine, He's not played that much professional Football has he?

...the assumption always is that these lads are going to be successful on loan. You say Watford will be challenging, so points will be precious and Branthwaite won’t be allowed much leeway if he has a run of poor games or makes critical mistakes.

He might struggle to settle down there. It could go horribly wrong, he could easily be frozen out and we don’t get the same player back.

Loan maybe. But Watford??? Didn't they have 5 managers last year? Going into instability with a club who has yet another new manager who has to prove himself? Sounds a dicey situation.

Keep ...we need him. Would just be one MORE to bring in and seeing as we are struggling to get anyone at this point ....Branthwaite and Gordon are the proverbial " Everton like a new signings " at this point !

If Branthwaite is on the bench next season then we really are in a bad way. If he stays here getting no games then it could be 2/3 years before we actually realise if he’s good enough or not. I’d much rather see him out on loan and get tested.
According to this forum after a few games Browning and Galloway were future England regulars, they didn’t bomb because they went on loan, they bombed because they didn’t have ALL the attributes to make it here. I’d much rather Branthwaite went out and proved himself.
