Feel a bit intimidated dipping my toe into this thread - and don't want to trigger anyone!

Over the years I have picked up a few jazz albums - Decided to put on 'Kind of Blue' last night after work.

It's lovely, it's melodic and atmospheric and creates a mood - but it's like background music to me. I just can't imagine myself sitting there and fully concentrating on an album like a would a great indie, rock or folk record.

I know that everybody else will disagree with me in here - but I guess the joy of music is that different people gain different things from different genres

Jazz, like Classical, can be a bit snooty.

Just enjoy it mate.

It's pretty cool and non-judgemental in this thread, so wade in anytime.

There's so much range. Both Miles Davis and Don Ellis played the trumpet, as have hundreds of others. The results are so different, though.
I'm a big fan of Thomas Gansch, the soloist on this, and I'm a big fan of Don Ellis's music for about 50+ years now. Hold tight. Really good band here.

IMO mate Kind of Blue is the greatest jazz album ever and Miles Davis is the most important, influential musician in the last 100 years . But , hey it's all about opinions.
I must have played it over 400 times and always hear something fresh and different in it.

Modern Jazz is like abstract art. Some call it discordant and unmusical. Pretentious, whatever.
The thing is to listen several times to a number. If you still don't get anything then fair enough.
But often a few listens reveal something magical. It certainly worked for me with 50s bebop, Monk, Coltrane etc.

Interesting. I love jazz. I have in excess of 600 recordings. I have some jazz by modern artists, like Zara McFarlane but I have no modern or avant-garde jazz by artists like Ornette Coleman.
Sure I've listened to them but to me they are just a discordant mess. However , one man's meat is another man's poison so to speak.
Right now I'm listening to Chet Baker , having just played Sketches of Spain by Miles.
Whatever you listen to , enjoy amigo.

Coltrane takes Rodgers and Hammerstein 2nd, into outer space.

Good shout Jazzy.

Love Mile's playing this.

Miles and Coltrane… Their early stuff was incredible!
I don’t know if had anything to do them being hooked on heroin in the younger days?
But their later stuff isn’t as impressive to me. No smack, no soul! 🫢

I also digged this version of 'Summertime':
