Go and find a single post from me demanding loyalty from anyone. I dislike him cos he's crap no more, no less. As a person I've got loads of time for him. Always talks us up. Always acts properly. Never rocks the boat and looks like a nice fella.

He blatantly isn't crap though is he?

He has been our keeper for years and in that time we have one of the best defensive records around.

How do you explain that?

Come on Ste, he's not crap

I'm not saying he's amazing mind, but he's certainly not crap

He's a decent stopper who can occasionally make a mess of things. Most keepers basically

I think both sides on this debate, overplay their hand. When we reached the FA cup final, Howard had a great year and was one of the best in the league.

The last couple of years he hasn't been near that level.

He hasn't always been crap, (I actually thought he was very good for the last half of last season) but he isn't a top keeper, anymore.

AF, the voice of reason

A defensive manager who instilled a defensive style and recruited players, even strikers, who demonstrated a desire to defend. He's also played behind some absolutely superb defenders.

He's very lucky to have played under Moyes IMO. If he was at the likes of Newcastle he'd be shown for what he is, an awful keeper.

No mate. It's all the things he doesn't do I dislike him for. Can't come for crosses, gets bullied at set pieces, poor communicator, bad positioning, inspires panic, not calm, in his back four and does a lot of the basics in a very unorthodox manner.

*awaits Americans

Funny this. Factor in my bias if you will but I don't see how Robles is our No. 1 to start the season. Howard is class and hasn't done anything to warrant losing the nod. Glad there is now competition for the spot, can only be a good thing. I like the signing of Robles. But let's also keep in mind that Wigan went 3-4-3 since he became starter.

He's been a decent signing, no question. He's very replaceable though. I honestly dont see how a GK of his standard is seen by some to automatically command the starting place ahead of this useful looking new GK.

Martinez has to start with Howard, of course, for diplomatic reasons - but I cant see him hesitating to bench him when/if Howard sees another hopeful shot from distance fly past him or bundles the ball into his own net from a corner.

I'm torn on this because he was in such obvious decline from basically summer 2010 through to the end of 2012 that I'd assumed he was just past it and we needed rid, especially given how poor he was last autumn.

But he honestly has been much better since the turn of the year. Not back to his 2008-09 form, of course but certainly good enough, so I don't want to be too harsh.

Still think he's the first person you'd replace when a sheik arrives and you look to build a CL team, mind.

Maybe his back injury was slowing him down and getting it fixed made him better?

You never know

We're going into a WC year; I'd guess Howard will be concerned at recent developments.
