i think neville is the exception here mate lol best keeper of all time as a number 2 isnt the same as a cech / cuicidni situation

True, but you question merely asked when did we last have a goalkeeper pushing the no.1 and the answer to that us Nev ;)

In truth we have never had two top class goalkeepers at the same time.

Very few teams ever do.

The Cech/Cuicini situation was exceptional and in reality the latter wasted his talent sitting on the Chelsea bench for so long.

He opted for the easy life.

Really top class goalkeepers are a very rare commodity and there are very few among that elite would be happy warming a bench.

I'd say by definition your back up goalkeeper is not going to be very good.

Though they did insist on a buy-back clause... €3m (first season) and €5m (second season)
Aye, but is it not clever to do that for any deal involving a player you arent peddling to begin with?

Arsenal had first choice on fabregas, have a buy back for Vela, Barca have a buy back on Romeou (spelling?) I'm sure we have paid for chelsea not to have a buy back on lukaku etc etc

Few examples but it makes sense to have that if there is any chance that player becomes good enough in the future.

you know what, agree with all of that mate.

Additionally, given an opportunity to audition yourself or to show you can compete for the #1 job you'd hope he had played a bit better. Cowering from the ball like your mate playing keeper in a pickup match is not the way to do it.

Got a feeling Martinez is already hinting that he is our No.1

From Martinez' interviews and the fact he was given a five year deal, i think it's a safe bet he'll replace howard this season.

Joel is the permanent signing I've been most interested in so far. I thought he looked good at Wigan in the games I saw him play last season.

Howard's needed replacing for years.

If he doesn't become our starter immediately I would not be surprised if he at least takes care of all of our cup games, instead of Howard being run out there for 50+ matches a season. I am sure RM will play the best keeper but he does seem to want to at least start grooming Robles for the future. Barring a fantastic year from Timmy, I could see this being his last season for Everton. He could still get something on the market and he is too young and talented to be content being a back up.

Howards not 'decent' or 'excellent' he's 'okay' always has been, he's a medicore keeper and we've never had the money to replace him properly, along with him being moyes' favourite. He's done a decent job over the years but thats about it, he's never been great. Unsure if Joel will replace him THIS season but he definitely will soon.

Howard will be moved on at the end of the Season.

His time is up.

number 1 for everton, goodbye howard

The age of Howard is at an end.

Trust me.

I don't think he'll start out first choice. But i fully believe he will be first choice, and better than Howard by jan.

Dunno lads. Maybe.

I don't think I've ever seen a goalkeeper get fooled so easily as Robles did for the goal last night.

Hopefully the last we've seen of this imbecile.

I actually think he did really well aside from the goal.

Unfortunately the goal was a horrific mistake that you wouldn't expect a 12 year old to make.

For someone playing his first game in 9 months in front of a back four that had never played together, he wasn't that pad apart from one error of judgement,

apart from the shot that went straight his hands again (southampton home)
