Joel Robles

Let's not get carried away with him eh.... personally, I still have massive reservations about him.

There can be a middle ground sometime you know, players aren't either awful or amazing.
Perfectly sums up my sentiments. He's certainly improved over the last handful of games, especially with regards to last night which was pleasing.

However, he is certainly not at the standard that we either require or expect. He no longer gives me shudders, yet he's not a great!

Some great saves yesterday, but looked poor with regards to penalties which from experience is difficult to learn. The rest may be confidence.

I'm certainly much happier knowing he's at least an adequate substitute keeper and can offer some competition.

Is RM playing that game with a revolver and only one bullet, called Russian Roulette, it seems like it. We shout out for the likes of Barkely to get with it but RM needs to do so as well.
I think the point of debate has to be whether Howard or Robles are adequate, rather than expecting our third choice keeper to be outstanding.

Most third choice keepers are pretty inexperienced and Griffiths is no difference: some may be better; some are worse; most are kids.

What we genuinely need to ask is whether money should be spent on a new keeper? If so (my inclination), is it to replace Howard or Robles?

Howard is not without his flaws, but I doubt employing someone to from the offset replace him will be cheap. Like for like is pointless and risky.

The cheaper option of replacing Robles is itself not without risks. Do we want to someone who'll actually challenge Tim, or just better than Joel?

The former option itself is again not going to come without a few pennies, so simply replacing Robles appears to keep the status quo.

Tim isn't great and neither is Robles, but unless it's going to clearly improve the squad then I think we should wait until the summer.

Bringing a name in to cover just for a couple of weeks seems needless and frivolous. I want someone who comes and stays!

You don't know Robles won't be great. He's been pretty awesome so far and most of the Wigan fans thought he would be a future star. Getting someone else still comes with risks. If they're really that great then by 28 someone would have bought them by then. Maybe we should just take the risk and play Robles. Worst case scenario he doesn't meet expectations and we play Howard and buy a keeper in the summer. The alternative is to bin a good young GK now for who knows costing us money and maybe even a great goalkeeper for the future.

Thought his distribution, both throws and kicks, was good last night. Iirc he did one amazing kick that landed close to the. opposing penalty box that Lukaku had a good chance with.

Seem to remember last preseason that he could really welly it down the field, if we are mixing it up a bit more that could be very useful.

The question is when are going to start climbing the table?

We play WB & CP next - games we should be winning - if we cannot climb the table, then at least get more points on the table.

We are going into games, thinking we do not score we have lost. If we score one goal we might get a draw. To win a match we at least have to score 2 goals.

To be fair you are right, I do not 'know' he will be great. However, I do have fair reservations as I would contest that he's been 'awesome'.

Do not get me wrong, he has improved as of late as I mentioned in an earlier post which is obviously a positive.

Last night's performance is a testament to that: apart from looking relatively unprepared for the penalties, he was good throughout the game.

Nevertheless, I've still seen him play worse more times than I have seen him play well, including some pretty glaring errors last year.

Southampton at home last year... Arsenal in the cup... Krasnador at home... plus a few examples when he first replaced Tim this season.

I know goalkeepers rely heavily on confidence (an ex-keeper myself), and with experience he'll improve, but I don't think I've seen enough yet.

Competent keeper somewhere? Definitely! Competent back up for us? Yes, I'd go for that (in short term at least). Number one? I'm unconvinced.

Hopefully I am proved wrong; I'm man enough to happily eat humble pie if he does turn out to be great. Still, I'm not too optimistic.

Hope he continues his fine form. Every game he's looked a little sharper, a little more confident and more assured a out what he's doing and what the defence is doing. Not arsed what anyone says, he made 2 absolutely top drawer saves last night and deserved to be on the winning side.
