Talking of keepers, I see that Norwichs great foray into the transfer market includes the signing of Carlo Nash.
Damnation! Another one we missed !!!

I think both sides on this debate, overplay their hand. When we reached the FA cup final, Howard had a great year and was one of the best in the league.

The last couple of years he hasn't been near that level.

He hasn't always been crap, (I actually thought he was very good for the last half of last season) but he isn't a top keeper, anymore.

This, all day. Think about the amount of mistakes Howard made last season that led directly to goals. Villa away, Newcastle home (both goals), Norwich home, Chelsea away, Fulham away. I can only think of Southampton away as an example of a game where he single-handedly earned us a point with his saves

howard was never good enough, new keeper signing for us is great news, with luck robles will know how to boss his back four and command the box like all top keepers should.

*awaits Americans

Really?

Is this "broken record" comment going to be continual with you?

So, if any American chooses to defend Howard's play, performance, etc.... it must undoubtedly be because they're American and therefore renders their opinion of Howard, or any other American player for that matter, biased and invalid.

I for one welcome Robles here and if he unseats Tim Howard, that's fine by me. It just means that Everton are better off for it. That said, I still think Howard is a fine keeper but has lacked any competition over the past several years.

Agreed. Been lacking a quality second keeper, and obviously has had a knock on effect on Howard.

The stick Howard is getting is laughable.

Remember all his mistakes but completely ignore all his world class saves.

Hart dropped some right clangers last season, same with arsenal's GK, utd, Chelsea's and Liverpool's. The only ones who didn't were spurs 2. Is that maybe because there were 2 very good keepers wanting 1 spot???

Howard's not perfect, his crossing is poor as is his distribution but he's been a great GK otherwise, made many of saves which have saved us points! He's lacked compitition for sure this last couple of years and hopefully Joel signing will keep him on his toes.

It's a joke really.

No, it actually is just that Bill, just a joke :)

Think Howard deserves a bit more respect than he is getting tbh. I think Martinez has decided he needs a stronger squad than he inherited and wants cover for every position. He now has 2 good keepers, creates a rivalry that keeps both on their toes and probably gives Howard an overdue kick up the arse

Competition on his national team, competition at his club. Good. Also a World Cup coming, which means Tim has extra incentive to be on his toes. He's nowhere near as bad as some of you make out, but competition can only be a good thing.

He should start out the season, but if Robles is good, and Tim makes mistakes, all bets are off.

Glad we have someone decent to take the reins also in case of injury.

One note before all of you toss Howard to the curb - he can actually be a good mentor to Robles. He's vice captain of his national team, meaning there is leadership ability there. I'd be glad to see him take Robles under his wing and help him out. That's what the good ones do.

I think it'd silly of Evertonians not to recognise that Howard has been a damn decent keeper for us overall in his career.

Don't recall us having two very good keepers for a long time. Personally think Howard will play out of his skin this season due to all the points made on here. Joel looks very good value in the long term!
