Joel Robles

Don't recall us having two very good keepers for a long time. Personally think Howard will play out of his skin this season due to all the points made on here. Joel looks very good value in the long term!

Southall and Mimms! Myhre, Gerrard and Simmonsen. The list is endless!

Just messing.

Same was said when he signed Mucha, a keeper who was playing in the world cup knock out stage and the CL at the time.

Lets not get carried away with a kid most of us have barely seen.

Really?

Is this "broken record" comment going to be continual with you?

So, if any American chooses to defend Howard's play, performance, etc.... it must undoubtedly be because they're American and therefore renders their opinion of Howard, or any other American player for that matter, biased and invalid.

I for one welcome Robles here and if he unseats Tim Howard, that's fine by me. It just means that Everton are better off for it. That said, I still think Howard is a fine keeper but has lacked any competition over the past several years.

Dunno, you know, maybe it was a joke.

But there is some truth in it. The majority of those who defend Howard when he makes mistakes that are indefensible are American, as were those who wanted Clint Dempsey, for example. And of course the 'broken record comment' is going to be continual if it's something I believe - I wouldn't call your Christianity a broken record comment, would I?

Competition on his national team, competition at his club. Good. Also a World Cup coming, which means Tim has extra incentive to be on his toes. He's nowhere near as bad as some of you make out, but competition can only be a good thing.

He should start out the season, but if Robles is good, and Tim makes mistakes, all bets are off.

Glad we have someone decent to take the reins also in case of injury.

One note before all of you toss Howard to the curb - he can actually be a good mentor to Robles. He's vice captain of his national team, meaning there is leadership ability there. I'd be glad to see him take Robles under his wing and help him out. That's what the good ones do.

He's one of the quietest reserved keepers I've ever seen. If he's not like that on the pitch he won't be off it.

Robles doesn't need a mentor he's 23. He'll be his own man at this point.

I was delighted when we signed Mucha actually after seeing him in the World Cup

Shame it never happened for him here

It was, obviously he made that howler against chelsea in the league cup a few years back, but when he had his chance against city last season he played an absolute blinder

Well he doesn't need someone to teach him how to tie his shoes (well ... I hope not) but at 23 for a keeper (NETS!) he's practically a baby. I'm sure he can learn a lot from Howard.

It's a good situation. I'd lean toward Howard taking this year and Robles moving forward the following season but either way I'm happy with two seemingly viable options.

True, true ... but at least this kid actually plays for us ... most of the time people are getting carried away with some "sure thing" youngster who just signed for another team while we signed a 30 year old it's a joke really.

I'd be surprised if Howard lost his job this year. I'm not sure how Robles could "prove" to be the better keeper in a few pre-season games v. what Howard has done at a top level for a decade. If he gets the job off the bat it might be for the wrong reasons ... although that doesn't mean he won't be a success.

I think the games plus a direct comparison in training will be the key. I'd be surprised if Robles starts the season but if Howard plays as he did for a lot of the last four years he'll be lucky to be in the side by Xmas. Having two players pushing for the spot is ideal and I hope that theme continues through the whole side.

Still, I'd be very surprised if Howard can teach him much as all the things he's good at are instinctive. He's a very unorthodox keeper.

Howard

Good positioning and shot stopping.
Awful at coming for crosses.
Poor distribution.

Mucha

Horrendous at everything.

No idea how good the new guy is but hopefully he turns out to give Howard proper competition.

Mucha, horrendous at everything?

Take it you didn't see the City game then.
