Joel Robles

I think this is the territory we are getting to with Joel now. His clean sheets record is very good, he calms the defence in front of him and makes me calm watching us. I remember in his second season, coming into a side that was completely all over the place defensively he kept something daft like 3 consecutive clean sheets. It was the only timer under Martinez we looked like we wouldn't conceede.

This is a lad who at youth level was ahead of De Gea. Now I doubt he will ever get to that level, and it it almost Kopite levels of delusion to suggest that he automatically will. However goalkeepers tend to peak at different moments and some do develop later, as they grow into their bodies somewhat.

For what is a youngish goalkeeper getting his first proper run his record of clean sheets and other stats are massively impressive. I believe he will continue to improve (and will need too) but people play down just how well he's been playing for us.

Our alternatives in the summer are to go and buy an elite goalkeeper. Could we entice away someone like a Lloris? I highly doubt it. Or we get a prospect. As indicated I like Butland, there are likes like Horn or Leno from Germany. However having seen Karuis and Feiler similarly highly rated from Germany struggle to adapt are they significantly better than Joel? Likewise Butland post injury, is he that much better than Joel?

I don't wax lyrical over goalkeepers. I am a tough judge. The only one I've seen for us better than Joel was Martyn (I only got the end of Southall).
In fairness mate, I don't think either Karius or Zieler were as highly rated in Germany as they were on this forum, and I believe that was reflected in their respective transfer fees.

of the other two you mentioned, Leno, in particular, is top class imo, but why would he come here when he is getting regular CL football at his current club. Horn is a level below but I wouldn't be unhappy were we to acquire his signature. He and Joel would be excellent competition for each other.

But how much would he cost?. IF Joel continues his current form for the rest of the season, do we have enough of a transfer budget to lay out £30m+ on a keeper when so many other area's need improving?.

In hindsight, I'm pleased that we didn't panic buy a keeper in January as robles has earned this opportunity to show what he can do. Here's hoping he can keep it going for the rest of the season and save us some money in the summer. Like you say, it's a long tome since I've felt this level of confidence in one of our keepers, but injury and confidence have a habit of nipping you in the butt when you least expect it.

Declaring him as good as De Gea and Courtois is a bit over the top, undoubtedly.

Yes, it's very RAWK like behavior.

I remember a few years back quite a few people on RAWK claimed they had the best centreback partnership in the Orc from Lord of the rings and I can't remember who the other player was.

But, they genuinely believed it.

Let's give him till the end of the season, if he does as he is doing now then great.

Unless Joe Hart becomes available then Joel is absolutely earning his place as number one. Even then I'd start Joel and push Joe to challenge for the number one spot. Joel has huge potential.
Much rather we stuck with Joel then go for Hart, for a few reasons.
One is the amount of money it would cost to get Hart really isn't worth it, not when we need to spend on others areas.
The other being he just makes far too many individual mistakes, something Joel dosent seem to do.
Hart is just media profile, but who cares about that?

He wasn't, it's just an urban myth.

People need to calm it down with this over hyping, it's getting to RAWK levels of delusion.

He has got a lucky break with Steklenburg getting injured and took his chance and done well. Steklenburg was brought in as backup, Robles would have been shipped out if we had bought a new number one.

Think he needs a longer run of games before comparing him to Joe Hart. Joe Hart has more caps than Robles has started first team games in his career.

Let's be patient and give him until the end of the season and see how he gets on before calling him the new Southall or one of the top 3 keepers in the premiership as some have said on here.
You're right in what you say mate, although in fairness, most of the excessively positive comments seen recently have been in reference to his form. Nearly everyone still have question marks and have said that he needs to continue to show that form for the rest of the season before we can consider him good enough to start next season as number 1. Even then, he'll still only be as good as his next bad game because we all remember the Robles who looked decidedly dodgy for us during his first 2 seasons.

I was one of the ones who made a comment about him being among top 3 in the league. My actual words were if he continued this form until the end of the season, and it's a big IF, then he would imo, be one of the best 3 keepers in the league (this season!!). I stand by that comment, given Butland has been injured and Forster, Cech and Lloris have not been near their normal standards.

Joel was just turned 23 when he signed for us; a baby in goal keeping terms. Since then he's probably been the most improved player on our books. He's still young enough to continue learning and improving. He got a lucky break when Stek got injured, took his chance and deserved to keep his place in the team. His continued good form has earned him the opportunity to stake his claim to be number on for the rest of the season and, if his form continues, to be given a further opportunity for next season.

I personally don't have a problem with people comparing him to Hart by the way, but that's mainly because I don't particularly rate Hart.:)

Declaring him as good as De Gea and Courtois is a bit over the top, undoubtedly.
Crazy I agree. But has anybody actually said that mate?. I don't recall reading that anywhere. Happy to be corrected and to pay the guys psychiatric fees:p

Any truth that De Gea took up goalkeeping after being inspired by Robles saving shots with his nose at youth team level?

People scoffed at my suggestion that Robles could play for Madrid but anyone watching Kaylor
and the first goal against Napoles would surely prefer Robles.

As for Loris, he threw the game at City and Hart has a history of dodgy moments.

There are no certainties in sport but Robles' stats have been tremendous this season and he has been
a rock in our goal. The Club can spend money needlessly if it wants but I am sure Robles is going to be a top
keeper for years to come.

Unbelievable.

By that way have you got that original comment anywhere about Robles / Madrid? Just so we can see it in all its glory
