Joel Robles

We have come 7th our GD is not that bad conceding our outfield is more concerning need a keeper to push Robles as he is the better of the two imo!
Nah, he's not good enough. He's not as bad as some on here make out, but if we have designs on the CL qualification spots we need a more commanding keeper.

They way I see it, this thread is split in to 2 camps.

The 1st group, and definitely the majority, largely made up of the "funny" clique members who's opinions count double because they post more often, so you know, that counts for something I guess. Only a fool would dare question them, for fear of being ridiculed by the pack, and by sheer volume alone, shouted down to the point of drowning the original post in an ocean of terrible "in" jokes and thinly veiled attacks designed to detract and belittle anyone's opinion that doesn't fit the cliques agenda.

They unobjectively think that Joel is terrible, and so rather than see him for what he is, devalue anything he does well and magnify any hint of a mistake, even going as far as to blame him for goals he couldnt really do anything about (RS at home).

They like to compare him to other goalkeepers from other teams, in other leagues or other generations altogether, because that is obviously fair and can't possibly be influenced by other circumstances, ie teams they play in, players they play with, etc.

Any indication that any of these other goalkeepers are anything less than superhuman, when making their own mistakes, and they all do, is dismissed almost as fast as any praise that is sent the way of Joel.

The other group, the minority, is made up of people who have watched Joel perform well (not amazing as the other group would have you believe) and are judging his performances next to the only real thing you truly judge him on. Games he's played, saves he's made, goals he's conceded. Most of these people fall in to the category of non clique members, not enjoying the same level of wit (Hahaha) as their hilarious counterparts, and in trying to use reason to argue their case, are shot down because Joel actually isn't 1980's Neville Southall, or some other mutant goalkeeper who doesn't make mistakes or concede goals, ever.

They say, within reason, that Joel is the best Goalkeeper we have, and based on his overall performance, has deserved his run in the side, and deserves to be considered a viable option, especially if we are to spend big in the summer, as other areas need addressing sooner.

Not once has anyone in this group compared Joel favourably to any any legend or even any of the unrealistic targets the other group have listed as alternatives. But in suggesting that he has largely done well, and is better than some of the other subpar, less experienced, or unknown goalkeepers we would still have to spend a fortune on to sign, he has done enough, for the most part, to be given an extended run until a top, top keeper becomes available.

They have also rightly tried to point out, that even these top keepers, Lloris, DeGea, Courtois, etc, have also made mistakes... But they don't count because none of them ever played for Wigan.

And yet, they all still seem to like Leighton Baines.

So basically, the people arguing the case for Joel need to stop. The decision has been made. You can't have an opinion. The clique has spoken. Joel is crap. No matter what you witness yourself, it doesn't matter, it's an illusion. If Joel were keep 38 clean sheets next season, it wouldn't be because of him, it would in spite of him. But every goal conceded would most definitely be his fault.

He can go for weeks, months, without making a mistake, but the clique will be waiting with baited breath, for the 1st hint of an error to jump on his back. And they will take pleasure from it too. Which is frankly bizarre.

We always seem to look at Big Nev through rose tinted glasses, remember he was loaned out while being kept out of the team by the great Jim Arnold and later on in his career he had some questionable games for us,a 3-5 home defeat to QPR and a certain Derby game spring to mind.Given we should get EL Robles is worth keeping as a back up at least, and maybe Stek might take a coaching role if we do end up signing a new number one.
No problem with Robles as a no. 2 but we need a vocal, box-dominating keeper. Nev had his issues but 2 league titles, 2 FA cups and a cup winners cup will do for me and he won us more points than he lost us.

Eh 6'1" is a fine height for a keeper. We have two massive keepers right now and neither are very good. Casillas, Ter Stegen, Navas, Lloris, are all between 6'0" or 6'2". I don't get the infatuation with Pickford, but to be fair, Sunderland would make any keeper look both brilliant from a saves standpoint and crap from a goals against standpoint.
I'm not crazy about Pickford but I like the idea of a young first 11 that can grow up together. Players that spend day in day out training and playing together develop an understanding and that's what I want for us. Chop and change 3, 4, maybe 5 of the first 11 but if you can keep a core of 5 or 6 quality players for a few years they can do remarkable things, look at the ManU team of the late 90s/early 2000s.

You are clearly exorcised by the criticism of Robles, and I agree some of it is over the top. Where I disagree is that all of the criticism is unwarranted. I think there is a third group who don't actually think Robles is terrible but don't believe he is good enough to take us to the next level, who don't believe he is capable of commanding his box or his defenders in a manner that will gain us the 8 or 9 points a season that a truly top keeper can get for you by turning losses into draws and draws into wins. I'm not sold by Robles but I am certainly not a clique member (all of @Moomin, @chicoazul, @MorgsGoat etc.. have called me a cock or some other charming name at some point or another).

I can't remember this but would like to apologise for my unacceptable behaviour nonetheless sir.

Good post a cliche on the GOT - well I neverlol
Your spot on about Baines great servant coming to the end - he has had no cover sure he had to play with knocks etc
We will come 7 th with a good team to push on needs more than a top keeper!Six players needed if some leave!

Tell me where another Nev who is out there?
If I had those skills I wouldn't be whiling my days away working for the man. I'm a classic armchair critic! I could name some names, but folks would, rightly, say that they wouldn't come to us. We need Walshy to earn his money.
