John Stones transfer saga

This is why I don't understand why we're even entertaining an offer. He's only going to get better and better and he's got four years on his contract - he won't jeopardise his own career by doing a Mirallas and sulking, and the lad is so good he'll have Barcelona knocking on his door within two years.

He's £50m in the bank - settling for £30m at this point would be as big a mistake as the fee we let Rooney go for.

Agree. I just see him going to Barca. Always have done.

They're in absolutely no position to be playing hard ball. They don't give us top dollar they don't get the man they desperately want.

they are making fool of them selves here. would love if ManU would suddenly jump in too. Mourinho would hate that. Media has already made up their minds that he's Terrys successor. Koff. Stones is not going nowhere.

Chelsea transfer news: Jose Mourinho willing to pay Everton £34m for John Stones
Jose Mourinho remains confident of capturing John Stones, who he views as John Terry's long-term replacement

Chelsea remain confident of signing John Stones from Everton, but may need to pay as much as £34million to land the central defender.

Despite the fact a second bid of around £26m is expected to be rejected with Everton publically insistent Stones is not for sale, Chelsea will not be put off.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has earmarked Stones as the perfect successor to captain John Terry and wants the 21-year-old to be his big summer signing.

Roberto Martinez reacted angrily to Mourinho talking about Chelsea’s opening £20m bid for Stones and reiterated his desire to keep the player. Everton also revealed the club have written to Chelsea to say the England international is not for sale.

While negotiations could have been made more difficult by Mourinho’s comments, Chelsea still believe there is a deal to be done for Stones during this transfer window.

Manchester City hold the British record for a defender after paying £32m for Eliaquim Mangala, while Raheem Sterling’s £49m move from Liverpool will only strengthen Everton’s resolve to hold out for huge money from Chelsea.

Mourinho, though, is prepared to recommend that Chelsea eventually structure a deal that could be worth up to £34m in order to secure the signing of Stones.

The player could also more than triple his £30,000-a-week Everton wages by moving to Stamford Bridge, although money is unlikely to be a deciding factor behind whether or not Stones moves.

More significant could be the fact that Chelsea can provide a clear career path for Stones. Even with Terry and Gary Cahill ahead of him, the youngster could be confident of making 30 appearances next season before stepping into Terry’s boots.

While £34m may seem expensive for Stones, Mourinho believes the fee would be an investment in a player who could be a vital for Chelsea for the next 10 years.

Patrick Bamford may have been used as a makeweight in the transfer, but he is expected to join Crystal Palace

The Blues also have cash to spare and, even factoring in Stones, are on course for a much smaller total summer outlay than rivals Manchester City and United.

Chelsea had been willing to allow Patrick Bamford to move to Everton on loan, which could have smoothed their move for Stones, but Crystal Palace believe they have secured the striker’s services for next season.

It's a sickener I think. It's going to be hard to hold on to him now I think as 20 million was city's opening bid for sterling ... The sickener here is even if we got 49 million for him it's a bad blow for the club. Really now is time for the board to show if they really have the club at heart . If so they issue the statement. NOT FOR SALE AT ANY PRICE ... If not Jose is right. It only a case of how much and they will pay it ... Big call

Chelsea don't really pay silly money anymore like city though. Can't see them going above £35m and for that reason he's going nowhere.

I feel like £34m might do it tbh. Club record sale, British record for a defender. I'll be impressed with the club if they say no to that.
