I disagree. We can replace McCarthy. There's plenty of decent CDM who run around all day. There's very few real quality CBs in the whole of Europe. Even fewer young ones.

The reality is if we lost McCarthy it would clear a way for Barkley, Besic and Cleverly. If we lost Stones it would be a huge loss this season and an even bigger one in seasons to come.

Whilst I don't want either to leave, McCarthy would be the easier one to replace AND we have more cover at his position already. Stones has Jags next to him, and that's it. And Jags doesn't have too long left at the highest level.

I wonder how complex wage structures can be in salary negotiations. For instance, can the club suggest a clause that says "in year one of your contract, you will be paid £40k per week; in year two, you will get £48k per week, in year three it will rise to £58k and in year four you will go up to £70k"? Presumably there are performance bonuses: goals scored, assists, clean sheet bonus etc etc.

I would offer him a six year deal. In that six year deal I would offer a minimum fee release clause around £55m, and make it so that it was only valid after the third year of his deal was complete.

£30k seems to be the ball park.

Also, if this bid hasn't been made up by Sky (which tbh I wouldn't be so sure) Chelsea aren't stupid enough to think they'd get Stones for £20mil. This bid was to test the waters and see if they could get Stones to make the first move and ask for a transfer. Fingers crossed he doesn't - from all accounts he's an extremely down to earth lad

And Transfermarkt suggests his current contract expires at the end of June 2019.... Maybe offer him a new six-year deal then, with pay rises pencilled in to be effective from the day AFTER each transfer window closes?

Everton in for Evans has been running all week. Friday Stones to Chelsea. Some in the media have waited their opportunity to link the 2. Evans wouldn't go to Goodison to sit on the bench so must have been offered a start. So either Jags or Stones is off. So it must be Stones. Unless Stones has told Martinez he wants to go then it is a non story. Speculation.
