John Stones transfer saga

One of the worst pieces of business we ever did surrounded a young centre half.

To this day I have never understood why Gordon sold Ken McNaught in the summer of 1977.

Ken was never adaquately replaced at Everton and he went on to fulfill his potential at Villa, picking up both a league title and a European Cup winners medal.

Prime example why we should keep Stones at any price!

Never heard of the lid, but it's always a pleasure to hear from older, more knowledgable Blues who've been there, saw that.

Highlight of my Everton life is standing on a wall in Liverpool when I was 10 and we won the FA Cup, watching the team parade the trophy on their open top bus. Remember it like it was yesterday, sadly enough. One real trophy!

30 million Rio Ferdinand went for 32 million 13 years ago with inflation double that fee and we may listen!

Stones at this point in time is not what Rio was in terms of the finished article he was when he went from Leeds to Utd

There have only ever been 10 players whose transfer fee was over £50 million most were before FFP . Yes in12 months TV money will go up but the panico re the possible changes to the HG rule seem to have eased. From what I am reading the FA may well have to dilute their proposals meaning that the CL clubs will not be under quite the same pressure to buy HG

Chelsea will probably go upto £30 maybe even £35 million but I very much doubt that they will go much higher indeed Varne who is very very highly rated wouldn't cost that and in truth he is rated by many neutrals higher than Stones and at just a year or so older has far more experience at both club level and on the international stage

The gamble is will Stones develop, will he get a bad injury but equally as much of a concern is will he let his contract wind down for in just two more seasons and despite at that point still having another two years left on his contract he could walk away from the club who would get no more than a million or so in compensation.its what Sterling would have been saying to Liverpool in that in July 2016 he could have walked from Liverpool.

But the best way to secure him staying here this summer is to increase his wage and give him an extended deal. But, the agent will want a release clause in. Almost every contract for every player in the rem has one now. They're just not all banded about.

We could set a release clause of £60mil. Hell, Bryan Ruiz just signed for Sporting and they put a £43mil release clause in his deal. I mean, he's 29 and not very good. Really, they mean nothing other than the club is giving themselves a bit of leeway in not having to sell unless somebody makes a bid that big. And, as the player would have agreed to it when signing a deal, then they'd have no right to complain and kick up a fuss.

We don't have to worry about keeping here this season as he still has 4 years on his contract, we will only sell on our terms. If we give him a contract with a buyout clause all it does is take away for us to sell on our terms.

Simple then do not sell a potential England captain, and centre half!

Well if our terms are a £60mil price, then it doesn't really hinder us does it... Only makes it more likely we may be able to keep him longer.

From an emotional point of view that's what just about every supporter would say but from the practical business point of view if he doesn't sign a new contract before the end of the next season or if one is put on the table and he says not going to sign one the the money men will say he has to be sold

Someone made a very good point the other day, about how selling your best players to the top teams never really works, and how Liverpool would have been far worse off had they sold Gerrard for big money about 10 years ago. I can't really argue with that because it is the truth, however if we were to buy say Shaqiri (LW), Mertens (ACM) and Dragovich (CM) with the Stones money, then I think our team would be stronger than if we just kept John Stones. Chelsea's team may also become stronger as a result of buying Stones, but so would our's.

No the club reiterate we have no need to sell anyone!
