John Stones transfer saga

Chelsea's first game following the international break is a trip to Goodison Park on 12 September.
Latest from BBC Sport
Everton's John Stones has handed in a transfer request following Chelsea's repeated attempts to buy the defender.

The Premier League champions have had bids of £20m and £26m rejected for the 21-year-old England international, with a further £30m attempt also reported.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has repeatedly said Stones will not be sold this summer and the club have not responded to the latest development.

The centre-back moved from Barnsley to Everton in February 2013 for about £3m.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, who substituted John Terry during their 3-0 loss at Manchester City and saw his skipper sent off against West Brom last Sunday, wants to strengthen in central defence.

Stones is expected to be in the England squad for next month's Euro 2016 qualifiers against San Marino and Switzerland when it is named on Sunday evening.

It clearly does.

The club need to reject it, insist its too late for replacements and insist he stays. They arent in a position to buy 3 CB's in a week never mind the two we need prior.

If they dont, they are behind it in my opinion and Martinez should walk out of principle.
Look lets get something straight. There's no difference between the board and the manager. Martinez is ultimately in control of the situation but he can't stop Stones from handing in a transfer request. Whether he sells him or not will be his call.

Where the board are at fault is not providing any of the TV money to Martinez to strengthen the squad without having to sell Stones.

.....we are a mighty fine club with mighty fine supporters but we have no investment. whilst we are scrapping around playing brinksmanship over mid and lower range signings, Chelsea go out and secure Pedro in a couple of days. Not a level playing field.

This is very true. But we can show a bit of spine and just say sorry John you're contracted to us, play your heart out for us, enjoy the Euro's and then next summer we can talk.

Said we were being naive when we thought he would stay. We now have a new issue, Chelsea won't budge over 26 million.

That's not an issue - we don't have to sell a player just because he's requested transfer. Evidently his agent has been informed by Chelsea that they are planning a fourth offer. Chelsea aren't sure it will be accepted so this is a move to pressure the Everton board, which means it's probably less than £40m.

It still doesn't make any difference if the board have a pair and won't sell. This is the question.

So Chelsea are now going to start lowering their offer? Nothing changes with his price, he has a long contract, the fact he's handed in a transfer request doesn't mean his price starts plummeting.
