John Stones transfer saga

Good to see Martinez criticising Chelsea publicly for their pursuit of Stones, trying to throw their weight around, koff Chelsea!

Martinez had better be sure he can win this fight with Chelsea. It's one thing to be firm, it's another thing entirely to challenge another club's reputation in the press.

Roberto Martinez has expressed his disappointment at Chelsea making comments to the press regarding John Stones.

Speaking following Everton’s 3-1 defeat to Arsenal in the Asia Trophy final, Martinez said:

“First of all, we pride ourselves in playing a certain way and educating our young players in a manner that means they are always going to get attention from elsewhere. That is a compliment, a footballing compliment

“The other side is the disappointment in seeing a football club making it (the bid for Stones) so open, I don’t think that is the way we do it at Everton.

“We don’t speak about a player when he is registered at another club and there is no issue from our point of view – John Stones is an Everton player full stop. We are not a selling club in that respect.

“We work in order to fulfil our potential and I think in the last two years we have been very brave as a football club.

“We have given young players opportunities to develop important roles and we will carry on doing that.

“We want to be strong and as competitive as we can and we are going to carry on doing that. That is the only focus I have today.

“We are not a club that need to be worried about what other clubs put through the press.”
Well in Martinez. Do one Mourinho.

He's come out with the right thing. Shows no sign of intimidation.

Saying nothing would look like rolling over.

Saying he's not for sale at any price is sufficient. There's no need to pile on by questioning how they do business, especially when they have might (money) on their side.

Well done Boberto if he has come out and had a pop at Chelsea. At the end of the day as a fan you want your manager to represent your thoughts and feelings. Doesn't always work like that but he knows we shouldn't be bowing down to teams like Chelsea.

Koff Chelsea and Koff any other blag big time teams looking to buy our players.

Are we not nitpicking now? Would you rather he say "ok Chelsea, how much?"

He's stood up to Chelsea, and we know he likes the hyperbole. Good enough for me anyway.

I'm just not sure how Chelsea is supposed to react to this part:

“The other side is the disappointment in seeing a football club making it (the bid for Stones) so open, I don’t think that is the way we do it at Everton.

“We don’t speak about a player when he is registered at another club and there is no issue from our point of view – John Stones is an Everton player full stop. We are not a selling club in that respect."

It could just be a cultural difference, though. If that happened over here you'd have to start making immediate plans for a drive-by shooting to reclaim your pride.

Agree to disagree, then? ;)
