John Stones transfer saga

So it wasnt a formal bid then?? How come we turned it down then? Or didnt we, the papers did??

Bit baffled.

I would imagine it was a formal bid which they knew full well would be turned down...but published all over the press to try to turn Stones head

[Poor language removed]

Chelsea are only trying to disrupt the lad with these 'bids' in the press. Martinez has told them where to shove them..as he has every right to do.
They want to make a proper bid, do it to the club that owns the player, not the media...and make sure it's a massive one or you'll be told to shove that too.

They dont have to use the press. I doubt Stones only found out about the interest and bid by reading the Daily Mirror twitter account, he will know exactly whats going on.

Being firm in telling Chelsea a player is not for sale is fine, but I don't see the benefit to calling out Chelsea's business practices through the media. There's a difference in standing up to a bully and antagonizing him. One makes you look tough, the other makes you look petty.

There is also this small matter: Chelsea can offer Stones a contract big enough to make him forget how to spell Everton.
I DO see the point in calling out their business practice as you put it. Its unprofessional as it was done through their mates in media as opposed to behind closed doors so we bite back like we did to united two seasons ago and won. Everton are good in scraps like this.

I think some of our fans appreciated the fact that he said that out loud.

I know I did.

And that's totally reasonable. I loved what he said about McCarthy, and I was with him for the majority of his response to the Stones' bid. The response to United two summers ago was brilliant. There's always a line, and I think he may have crossed it this time, that's all.

They could offer that contract no matter what our manager says. Also another small matter, he's contracted to everton who doesn't need to sell

Yes, they could offer that contract regardless. But insulting them in the press isn't going to make them less likely to try and turn Stones' head.

I hope Chelsea wouldn't be so petty, but it's not a theory worth testing.

Exactly which further reinforces he's not leaving. The day leading up to the bid he said he was happy here and wanted to progress here

It's not making them more likely to go after him either. They're keen on him like a lot of big money clubs are. What do you think if Martinez is quiet they'll go away?

Still buzzing off that barnsley fan saying they have a 75% sell on clause hahaha. Excellent stuff really and got a few bites. I think the ' I'm an armchair Everton fan ' sold it to a few.

That's not even close to my assertion.

Anyway, so this tedium can be put to bed:

Most people liked Martinez's statement. I liked a lot of Martinez's statement, but disliked a particular part. In the end, it probably doesn't matter.

Good response.

I'd have preferred him to say we had already rejected an offer 3 times the size of what chelsea have leaked to the press.

State of the people in here moaning about what Roberto has said, hahahahahahahaa.

I KNOW LETS HAVE HIM BE QUIET WHICH MAKES THINGS SO MUCH BETTER. EVERTON HAS TO BE A NICE CLUB, A QUIET CLUB, A CLUB THAT SURRENDERS TO EVERYONE, HOW DARE ROBERTO GO AGAINST THAT.
