John Stones

Who would you pair him with Eggs? Ratcliffe?

.......difficult one, Ratcliffe was underwhelming when he first came in as full back but then really found his niche in central defence. TG is one I'm told was special but before my time. Probably Ratcliffe but John Hurst or Labone might've been a good partner for Stones.

Interesting what others think.

Labone. Hurst did what stones does... Takes the ball forward so needs a rock behind home to ensure space is covered. Lab one could play but it was not his role. A giant physical presence in the defence.
Stones is potentially superb imo. He is still physically a bit slight but clear has touch, timing and the heart of a lion when up against a tough forward. I have great hopes for him.

Mountfield ?

Feb 2013

Asked about Stones, Moyes added: "He is a young English player and we are always keen to add as many of those as we possibly can.

"He has been playing at right-back and playing quite regularly for Barnsley.

"I know there are a lot of people saying he will turn into a good centre-half in the future as well, so we will look at that, and we will try to develop him the way we have done with quite a few other young players we have brought in from the lower leagues over the years.

Do not get me wrong, it's not a bad form of embarrassment. However, I still think it is still somewhat embarrassing.

A player of his age shouldn't be so influential in a team like Everton, although I am glad he is.

I know what you mean but I think he's going to be something special and has the potential to do it at the very top of the game. I just hope it's with us mate

Ratters was probably the worst left back in the country,I can remember him head butting Hutchinson in the 1/4 final at GP pretty much cost us the game and a lot of blues wanted him out of the club that day,me included, how wrong were we?:eek:lolPS I think Dave Watson although not a ball playing centre half would have been the rock to the stones;)lol

I think we all wish for Everton to keep Stones for a long, long time. Personally, he is already shaping up to be a youthful captain.

His determination, composure and influence are clear to see even at a young age. With experience they'll only develop further.

Each game he makes a point of applauding the fans: a small but poignant mark of class. He has all the attributes to lead this club!

Can we keep him in the long term? I hope so, however it will difficult. He'll develop here and eventually certain clubs will come looking.

Hopefully his 'Blue' indoctrination will seep enough into his veins that it will halt any temptation, yet he'll certainly be able to compete at the top.

I am more confident that Stones will make it into the top echelons of the game than Barkley, simply based on his mental attributes.

He was always going to be a centre back even at Barnsley, he just started out a right back when he first broke into the first team so any mistakes he made wouldn't be as costly as they would at centre back, as a 18 year old he needed protection until he'd gained experience that's all, once his confidence had grown he was always going to move over. We're doing the same now with a young kid called Mason Holgate he's only 18 with a hand full of first team games to his name, he's always been a centre back in the under 18s but his first team appearances have been at right back, until yesterday when he played central once our centre back got injured and was superb, he'll do the same as what Stones did he'll leave for a premier league club and be classed as a right back but really he's always going to be a world class centre back.
