.....Moyes is on record expressing concerns about Barkley's lack of responsibility without the ball. He liked his players to do their bit when the opposition had possession.

Heard Neil Warnock talking about Barkley when he took him on loan at Leeds.....said he was breathtaking in training but Moyes called him and told him not to play Barkley in a position of responsibility. Says a lot a bout Moyes' fear of entertaining and taking risk.

Or the actual quote which is "‘you’ve got to be able to give him the freedom of not having responsibility to track back and defend because going forward he is as good as anybody’.”

See the Chelsea team that are top of the league? They defend from 1 to 11. Every player works back. Everton on the other hand deride the manager who asked that of Barkley and instead want a formation built around him being too lazy to work off the ball. He's not Ronaldo. He gets about four goals a season so he is not breathtaking going forward. He is good at running past people in midfield and shooting from distance, but if you want to play in midfield you've got to work off the ball. Moyes knew that but took it too far, Martinez has no conception of this which is why he plays a midfield three of one who is too old to work, one who is too lazy, and who can't really do anything but work. Probably why we're 11th in the league.

He struggled a bit yesterday, but a lot of established, experienced centre halves would against a player like Benteke. Good learning curve for him.
I wonder if/how Martinez lines Stones up against Lukaku in training.

Probably does, that's where Stones confidence comes from, as he finds it easy against Lukaku

It would be fair to say most of the team struggled yesterday as well, so it wasn't as if he was the lone player who appeared off canter.

We've got to expect peaks and troughs with Johh, as he's only a kid playing in a position where experience is often the pivotal factor.

By the way, not sure why the 'Stones' thread has become overtaken by discussion about Ross and his defensive abilities.

I wasn't having a pop at the lad. Like you say, everyone struggled and a youngster is always going to have bad days. Having said that, he's been very consistent for a player his age.

Apologies if I it appeared that I implied that you were. Rather, I was agreeing with you that experienced centre halves would have found it difficult.

Therefore, we cannot expect Stones to be the perfect and utterly consistent defender we'd like to have. He will make errors along the way.

Unfortunately though many Evertonians are too quick to criticise our players, so was more of a warning that John needs time to develop.

I'm actually surprised how consistent he's been for such a young lad, therefore one poor game isn't shabby at all.
