John Stones

Neither of them getting any help. Midfielders are not moving to the ball just standing there like bells getting the ball intercepted.
Defensively he was poor too. Oh well. It was a big game to come into however it goes to show how much of a bargain Marc Bartra is if the release clause is accurate.

The reality is the premiership is rubbish. Once England players play against better players they're exposed horribly.

John is going to have to learn to cope with this type of scrutiny if he is to achieve his stated aims of being a regular starter for the England seniors.

John Stones recovered in time from serious concussion to start his first game at these European Under-21 Championships. But he may wish he hadn’t. On a big night for his aspirations of establishing a reputation as a future England captain, he was unable to positively affect a defence which was found desperately wanting. England lost by three and each goal was eminently avoidable. The last was Sunday League stuff. Stones will have wanted to do so much better. Here is how he fared.

Decision-making
Stones suffered here. Italy’s first goal came from Domenico Berardi being afforded too much space at a quick free-kick but the Everton centre-back failed to react to the danger and, along with Ben Gibson, allowed Andrea Belotti to run through and finish. Stones could only appeal for offside in vain.

Bringing the ball out
The 21-year-old is admired by Roy Hodgson and Roberto Martinez for his ability in possession. It is why he is a target for Manchester United and Chelsea. He can come out from the back in a calm fashion and, in the first half, showed this by turning Marcello Trotta and advancing forwards. But he must guard against overplaying. Seconds later he had kept hold too long and was disposed to allow an Italy chance.

Positioning
Usually assured, the glaring omission in this department came for Italy’s second goal. Nathaniel Chalobah should have tracked back much better as Lorenzo Crisetig progressed but Stones could have come out earlier to halt his opponent. As it happened he tried to win the ball too late, it was slipped to Marco Benassi and England were 2-0 down.

Passing
Stones completed 56 of his 62 pass attempts to register a 90.3 per cent success ratio, the highest of any of England’s starters. He also completed the most passes. He can be pleased with that part of his game. There was also a smart clearance from an 18th minute corner.

Tackling
Used his body to out-muscle Alessio Romagnoli at an early corner and put one on Belotti to ensure his presence was felt. Those kind of challenges can turn a duel between defender and striker. He made three tackles in the game, winning two.

I don't know when the odds changed but last week Skybet had it at 1/5 odds on that Stones would be at Everton at the end of the window. It's now 11/10 that he stays with us and 10/11 that he goes to Chelsea.

Bookies odds generally don't mean much but I just don't like the fact they've changed that much within in a week. On the other hand, I'd be tempted to lump on that at 11/10 as I really don't see us selling him in this window.

Yep,just read that.Theres a massive difference having 2 disciplined players like McCarthy & Barry in front of the back four.
Italy could have got a small army thru Englands midfield tonight.Playing 4 4 2 at that level is antiquated.Poor from Southgate.

And yet in the media after the last game lots of people were saying we had to play that way to take advantage of Kane/Ings striking records. Damned if you do and damned if you don't really if you haven't got any really good defensive midfielders.

Yep...your right there ,didnt look like we had a proper defensive mid on the pitch.
Tbh thought it was an attack minded side when i first saw the teamsheet.Italy at any level play well against that formation.

I don't think it's got anything to do with discipline. They just weren't any good both at coping defensively but almost just as importantly receiving the ball and then holding on to it with out giving it away cheaply. If the other team win the ball around the half way line it always puts a lot of pressure on the CBs.

After about 25 mins the writing was on the wall and England started going long.

Unfortunately I think that's the mistake he made. He changed his tactics probably due to the media pressure.

I wonder how much the right "partner" alongside him in central defence would influence his future?

Playing alongside someone who you can learn from like Jagielka and/or having a player of similar age alongside you who compliments your game must make you feel "at home".

Also of course having a goalkeeper who doesnt make you have nightmares would help as well.

Yeah Zat, would be BOSS having 2 21 year Olds at the back.

I dont mean now, he has Jags now who hes learning from but down the track i wonder if and how having a defensive partner influences players into committing their futures.

I mean, having a Jags or a Gough experienced player as opposed to a Galloway in a couple of seasons with Stones becoming a mentor figure perhaps....or someone the same age at say 23/24.

Sigh.

Do your workmates or business associates not influence your future? Ive turned down opportunities and accepted others due to the culture and the colleagues.

Football is a bit different of course but when i was in teams i did choose who to play for based on who i would be playing with...

Just throwing it out there that this may influence his career path.
