John Stones

He wasn't good the other day, but its hard when you've got a non-existent midfield in front of you and you're having to do there job as well.

Given that he basically played midfield and was probably the only player looking to play the ball forward, it would be very harsh to crucify him for trying to get England back into the game.

England's first two games without Stones they concede 1 goal, an average of 0.5 goals per game.

With Stones in the team they concede 3.

The stats show defensively England were worse with Stones in the team.

In one of the London rags, Chelsea after John Stones

Chelsea are determined to test Everton's resolve to keep defender John Stones and will make a bid for his services this summer.

Standard Sport revealed in May that the England international was one of the options on the club's wish-list should they fail in an ambitious approach for Real Madrid star Rapahel Varane.

New Real Madrid coach Rafael Benitez has since promised Varane the first team football he craves, leaving Chelsea to look elsewhere.

There was a suggestion the club may still wait another year for Stones given the form of veteran John Terry and Gary Cahill in central defence on the way to winning the title in May, which should also see them start next season as the first choice partnership at the back.

But Chelsea are keen to make their move now for a player who has been tipped to become captain of the senior England team in the future.

The 21-year-old, who joined Everton for just £3m from Barnsley in 2013, will not come cheap.

Everton have placed a minimum £20m valuation on his head, even though he has only 38 Premier League starts to his name.

Chelsea know they need to find a long-term successor for Terry, despite the 34-year-old enjoying one of his best-ever campaigns this term.

Terry appeared to give Stones his seal of approval in an interview on TalkSPORT last week, saying: "I have seen a lot of games and I am a big fan of his. He pulls wide of the box and wants the ball and for a young defender to do that in the Premier League takes some guts.

"He is exceptional with both feet, he is a ball-playing centre half which you need to be these days.

"He is extremely confident. He looks to play from the back and that can only be good for English football that the likes of him are coming through. He is definitely one I have been impressed by."

With Everton attempting to keep their prize asset at all costs, Chelsea have explored other options.

It's not even a story if we get bids from Shelski and Manchester. They are merely forming a line here for next summer and fight wholl be first in the picking order. Bigger bid - first in line.

Before the U21 tournament Sky were saying Stones is best defender and should leave. Today Adam Bate has article asking what happened to all tough tackling defenders and makes Stones the prime example of everything that's wrong with modern defenders. Make your minds up!

Any idea how the cyclist is?

Chelsea are another club who need to be told to do one just like Man U. Yep they want to buy our best players so they can stay in the top 4 and stuff the rest, who they regard as cannon fodder.

£20m, are they having a laugh? If Raheem fn Sterling is being valued at £50m, theres no monetary value you can put on someone who can actually PLAY football..

Hate to say it.... should take a leaf out of the [Poor language removed]

£40 million not a penny less.... tell them not to waste their time or ours with anything less... move on
