John Stones

Analysing Stones' performance against West Ham, I would say that carrying the ball confidently out of defence is one of his strong points. He was less confident in dealing with the physical presence of Andy Carroll.

Which is what you will not see much of at International level. Big strong centre forwards, they are a dying breed in international terms. International football could well be right up Stones street. He seems to read the game very well and is confident to carry the ball from the back.

Once he starts regularly for Everton i reckon he will become an England regular within a year.

Stones is only 20 years old and is getting fair amount of PL experience now which shows how brilliant he is as a young footballer. I think he needs to improve two aspect of his game. First thing first he needs to gain more mass and strength (i.e. muscle). Secondly, he needs to learn how to deal with those high ball/cross.

I think with another season under his belt, more apps and maybe some Europa league games, this lad will be on the cuff of the England snr squad within 12 months.

Jags, Lescott, Dawson of the older gen left. Smalling, caulker, Jones, Cahill of the younger lads....England are looking weak at CB compared to years gone by.

Stones has a great chance of 50+ caps IMO.

John Stones tidies up so well, he cut his own umbilical cord after effortlessly slide tackling his way out of his mother's womb.

It's such a shame he isn't left footed as he could be the replacement for Distin rather than competing with Jagielka or he/Jags being pushed to the left. I don't really watch international football due to the time difference but I read somewhere that Jags is shifted to left sided centre back to accommodate another right footer--so I imagine the same would happen with us.

Very exciting at full back with Coleman on one side and either Baines/Oviedo on the other. Now, if we could get on another Stones but left sided our defence would be something to behold.

.....I was fortunate enough to see Labby lots and he was a wonderful player. The point I'm making is linked to your 'old fashioned Centre-Half' comment. Unlike other defenders of his era, Labone was not only very good, he also played the game in a wonderful spirit. I underline the word 'potentially' in my assessment of Stones. I think he can be better because he has that Beckenbaur-type quality in his game. He can make what Labone did look very simple, plus he has the quality to bring the ball out and switch seamlessly to a midfielder. Please don't think I'm undermining Labone, its just that this kid could be better.
Yeah fair enough mate if you'd had the privilege to see Labone play. I'm hoping you might be right.

A lot of teams don't play with a natural left footed/left sided CB pair. Terry has played his whole career at LCB. I'd say it's a bonus more than essential.

Press suggesting Micha Richards available in the summer. Would be a good addition for both RB&CB cover/compitition.

When I first read this suggestion I was pretty surprised that someone would be daft enough to suggest Micah Richards but after taking a look he's still only 25 and has an enormous amount of experience -- very good call.

I think that we need to expect Baines / Jagielka / Stones / Coleman to be the first choice over the next couple of seasons -once Distin starts to slow down. Behind them we have Oviedo covering on the left side and then Alcaraz for centre back -- have to say Richards would be immeasurably superior competing for a centre back or a right back berth.

The question is though, Richards or an Eric Dier young u21 player with the potential to take over the Jagielka role in a couple of seasons?

Perhaps shouldn't play against the top sides. Don't care for the 'learning experience' if it's costing us goals.
