.....potentially a better player, I think, but would be something if he was a similar man.
Seriously mate? I've never seen Labone play barring an old tape of the '66 FA cup final. But the stories I've heard say he was a wonderful player - a leader, great tackler and brilliant in the air - a proper 'old fashioned' centre half. Only personal issues, Ramsey's style of selecting based on international merit and reputation and the great Bobby Moore prevented him from picking up more England caps.

Classy player, who I think will only get better with age, and will hopefully be a player for us for years to come.

.....I was fortunate enough to see Labby lots and he was a wonderful player. The point I'm making is linked to your 'old fashioned Centre-Half' comment. Unlike other defenders of his era, Labone was not only very good, he also played the game in a wonderful spirit. I underline the word 'potentially' in my assessment of Stones. I think he can be better because he has that Beckenbaur-type quality in his game. He can make what Labone did look very simple, plus he has the quality to bring the ball out and switch seamlessly to a midfielder. Please don't think I'm undermining Labone, its just that this kid could be better.
