Both players are under 28. Both players will have completed 3 years of their contracts both were signed in 2014 ( the length left be it 1 year or 2 years is irrelevant) At that point both will be outside what's called the protected period.

Had the players been over 28 then the 3 year period is reduced to 2 years

okay. That's certainly a strange one.

Stones signed in 2013 didn't he? It's a strange rule but one I can't see being exercised anyway.

He signed the new deal in 2014 mate - after his breakthrough season in 2013/14.

Agree though, don't think we have to worry about that being used. We'll get money for them

4 day's to go before the nation can continue with it's preoccupation with every kick john makes during the game, (just boss it johnny ,if you start.)

As I say in an earlier post it's the threat of Webster that is a mighty powerful weapon and whilst there are just the odd occasion where players buy themselves out of their contracts clubs will know and agents will take great delight in bringing up the possibility of using this route out of the club. That's why I say Everton must sale now. If you look back I believe Ga it was reportedGareth Barry used this ruling to force his exit from Villa
Again as I have said there are two transfer windows where Everton hold the whip hand but in 12 months time things will be viewed differently. Isn't there a saying along the lines if it can happen it will happen?

Got a feeling City are really going to step up their interest in Stones.

Sky Sports have just said they're interested in signing him.

I don't think the fee we want will put them off.

A big statement of intent would be rejecting all bids for him again.

Can see him being a completely different beast next season under Koeman. Body on the line, taking the ball around forwards, heavy tackles, positional awareness, snide, the whole lot.

He needs all of that. Few big challenges early on in the season, make himself known.

That's mental.

Leicester just won the league with Huth and Morgan at centre half. Goal scorers win trophies for clubs, not centre halves.

All things considered I'd rather keep Stones as he's shown much more professionalism. Lukaku is just irritating me now and I won't cry when he goes. However I'm eager to see what Koeman can do with Stones. What a perfect role model and coach for the lad.
