well, no it doesn't if he goes to play under Pep or Mourinho - or even at Barca...

Of course you are right but I am not so sure that either of those 2 great coaches have improved individual players as defenders.

What Mourinho would do is coach Stones to play as part of a collective - which is much needed.

Pep's teams play a high pressing game and he encourages His defenders to play out from the back - which Stones loves ( but Mouriho disdains ).

So yes of course his game would / should improve under either of them but I suspect that Koeman having played the position would show greater interest / empathy in developing Stones individually.

I think it depends entirely who the 3 are.

If 3 static centre back mark 1 forward then I agree that the team will be overloaded in midfield

If one of them ( say Stones ) is given licence to push forward into midfield then it can work .

The system works particularly well when you play against 2 strikers but I accept that few teams have played that way recently ( although I think there may be a return , albeit slow , to teams playing 2 strikers in the future).

The system depends on the intelligence , ability and flexibility of those playing it.

True, and also a manager who is defensively sound to employ it.

As said, Koeman used it when Southampton were leaking goals, but after 8/9 games changed back as teams had started to figure out a way of playing against it.

I've always thought that it's a system that could be utilised for certain games, but not for a sustained spell.

The system works particularly well in Italy, though.

Signed a 6 year contact but just think what Koeman could do with stones and mori

You'd think a six year contract would have some sort of release clause? VVD best strength is in the air, which is something we were extremely weak at last season, and something that will have to drastically improve if we want to get out of the bottom half.

It's strange when things like this are reported for aplayer cannot sign a contract over 5years in length. I have know players to agree to extend their existing deal in say 6 months time which some report as being say a 5 &1/2 half year deal but quite simply if a player signs a contract over 5 years in length it automatically is considered invalid

Please explain this and advise why a contract in excess of 5 years in invalid ( please cite the provision ).

As a Solicitor I find this suprising to say the least.

I don't think that's the case at all mate... Managers sign 6/7 year contracts - it's exactly the same for players?

FIFA rules regarding players Article 18 part 2 states:

The minimum length of a contract shall be from its effective date until the end of the season, while the maximum length of a contract shall be five years. Contracts of any other length shall only be permitted if consistent with national laws. Players under the age of 18 may not sign a professional contract for a term longer than three years. Any clause referring to a longer period shall not be recognised

Thank you very much , very interesting. I certainly wan't aware of this but then I'm not a sports lawyer!

See you in 2018 :D

No it's really quite readable. I glanced at the specific provision Terraloon made reference to and a couple of other pages.

Mind you I am used to reading absurdly worded documents.

Should take a decent hour , perhaps when I am struggling to get to sleep.

I look forward to your synopsis ;)
