Everton are the best example. Our progress under Moyes and even Martinez would not have been as substantial without the sale of Rooney, Lescott and Fellaini.

Great so we sold Rooney, got 4th and then went to 11th, 6th, 5th, 5th, 8th, 7th, 7th, 6th. Seems like real progression there.

Spurs are one example.

The RS are another.

Arsenal, too. They got nowhere selling Nasri, Van Persie etc. Once they stopped selling and started buying (Ozil, Sanchez) they started performing and now they're seriously challenging for the title.

Give me an example of a club which, at our level, has used the sell-to-buy model to challenge for greater things? I can't think of one.
Atletico are one example of a sell to buy club that continue to do well. I think the key is to aim high when replacing the player you just sold. Selling one player and buying 5 will get you nowhere.

Agreed, the one crucial difference being that in Spain, Italy or Germany you can have a good season get into the top 4 and then build from there. In any other league our 13/14 season would have resulted in champions league football then you can continue to add from a position of strength. That's what Atletico and Dortmund did well.

You're right though that Atletico got themselves out of midtable obscurity through their one great youth product Torres. When they sold they always bought a direct single replacement. Aguero, Falcao, Costa, Griezeman. It's always ensured they had at least one world class player upfront without much added investment from the original Torres windfall. We split the Rooney and Lescott windfalls on good players but none of that quality or who had any resale value. Good for the squad but not for the team. Shrewd signings have rescued the situation somewhat as we were able to sell Fellaini and reinvest it all in Lukaku. We now have Stones Barkley Lukaku who would produce huge windfalls if sold. We need to learn our lessons though and use it to buy top quality not a quantity of squad players.

Selling to buy is a necessity in football. OK we keep hold of Stones, Barkley etc until they retire or get old and diminish then you are left with nothing. There are times when needs must. I am not saying sell Stones, because he is so gifted I would like to see him here for a good few years but feel he is so good we will not be able to keep hold of him. Simply because currently we cannot offer him what he wants in his career. Same with Lukaku and Del. We are not mixing with the big boys in the tournaments they want to be in. That's when we have to look at when we should sell to reap the most profit to enable us to keep rolling along. All this could be dumbed down if our Chairman sells the Club to the right people and not for the biggest profit then our chances to carry on building and maintain these top players for longer will be enhanced.

But yes selling the best players is the only way to survive for many clubs. Wheel and deal.

Well id have no problem spending £20mil.

Butland
Galloway
Stones
Barkley
Deulofeu
Lukaku

Thats just a ridiculous list and add in the other players slightly older in Mori/McCarthy/Coleman/Besic then its really a very strong group indeed.

Just need a GK /LW and playmaker for the first eleven and integrate the next wave through the youth system.

These next 3 major signings are crucial.

Oh, I'd spend that on him no question, but it's not about you or me. There's no way the club will spend that money on him sadly.

I don't think you can compare the Spanish league to our own, mate.

I cant understand us not signing Dier, Alli or Butland...

Obviously this is the Stones thread so i will add that Butland would mean we could play a high line and if we had signed Alli and Dier then Dier would be able to drop back as cover for stones allowing him to make runs into midfield and Alli being the link between him and Barkley...

Sigh! 3 England players there we could have picked up for circa £12mil...

Can't get them all (although we almost did with Dier). Should be thankful that in a new young English team two of the most exciting players are blues. I wouldn't swap Stones and Barkley for Disr and Alli, we definitely have the better pair. The rest of the footballing world is eyeing them wondering why they didn't pick these players up. They might be saying the same about Galloway, Holgate or Garbutt in a few years. We can't beat ourselves up for not being able to afford Dier and not getting Alli.

Unless Gareth Bale offers are coming in Jan he isn't getting sold. And yes selling to Barca would be nice, we can maybe get a loaner or two in the coming years and hopefully get the Gerard buyback erased.

He won't be here next season (unless injury) and that's OK. CB is one position in which you can develop and with good scouting find pretty good ones cheap (England CBs: Smalling rumored 7M, Jags 4M, Cahill 8M, Stones 3M, also Scott Dann didn't cost Palace much either). You sell Rom for 40M and you most likely got to spunk 25-30M just to find a suitable replacement. Sell Stones for 40M and you can find a quality CB for 10M.
