Great so we sold Rooney, got 4th and then went to 11th, 6th, 5th, 5th, 8th, 7th, 7th, 6th. Seems like real progression there.

If you look at our finishes preceding the sale of Rooney, then yeah, it was real progress. The Lescott money wasn't spent as well as it could have been, but most of it was recouped and spent again on other players. The sale of Fellaini allowed us to sign McCarthy and half of Lukaku, we clearly benefited from selling Fellaini.

Normally I'd love to say "I told you so" Louie but not here mate... he's going to be fantastic this lad and Chelsea haven't got a chance now, Stones deserves better than a minor London club.
Your right Doug......if you check my posts last week of the summer window I dont mind saying "told ya so"
Once in a generation players like this come along and this lad is going to the very top.
And we will be amply rewarded for what he is, a Very Top player. After the Euro's sits just fine with me.

I cant understand us not signing Dier, Alli or Butland...

Obviously this is the Stones thread so i will add that Butland would mean we could play a high line and if we had signed Alli and Dier then Dier would be able to drop back as cover for stones allowing him to make runs into midfield and Alli being the link between him and Barkley...

Sigh! 3 England players there we could have picked up for circa £12mil...

I think more so with Dier & Mustafi alongside keeping Duffy (though he didn't sot Martinez style I think he'd massively help us defending set plays in the air).

The difficulty was though at the time, particularly with Dier the money they wanted was massive and they basically ruled out selling him. We didn't have much money then (unlike now) and were being asked to pay 10 million for an under 18.

In todays money with the way transfers have gone thats probably like 18 million. It was a huge investment for a club and would have been a massive call (albeit looking at hime now the right one as he looks a machine in midfield).

We didn't mess up with many young players but Mustafi should have been kept.

As for Butland and Alli I know we made a big play at trying to sign Alli but he just chose Spurs. There's not a lot we can do about that. As regards Butland I have almost gone 360 on him in the last month or so of keeping a close eye on him, he is developing very well. Again it would have been 6 million plus to get him. In the end a lot of money for a club who had very little.

Your ideas are right but for each of the 3 you mention they just weren't available when we had the chance. I think they would have cost probably double what you are suggesting we'd have had to have paid though and in the end that would have been too big a risk and cost for us as a football club then.

The obvious final difficulty is that it would have taken 3-4 years of waiting to get those players to the levels they are at now. As we've seen with fans if we have a bad 3 months people are calling for the manager to go. It's a very tricky business. If we'd have been patient though what a team we would have had.

There are many things wrong at the club but we have a fantastic scouting network. I read recently the deal we wanted to tie up with Monaco was for Martial not Traore they changed their mind at the last minute. It shows to me our scouting system is very strong.

Would rather him go to Barca than anywhere else, provided we got minimum 50m.

Prefer to keep him forever and ever and ever though

I am totally with you mate

Sadly we will lose him though
Football though innit.

If you're not Barca or Madrid there's always a chance you'll be forced to sell your best players, no matter how rich you are.

Utd sold Ronaldo, Monaco sold James, the RS sold Suarez, Chelsea WILL sell Hazard whenever Ronaldo decides he fancies PSG and so on.

Dier i think we could have got in the same window as Spurs but sooner due to him being with us before....however it seems he didnt enjoy his time with us so much i read recently.

Alli we could have done in the previous window in a double deal i think? We got galloway in summer 2014 and i think they signed him in jan 2015?

Butland was meant to be coming to us...all over the news and then suddenly....Stoke.

Agreed on Martial, i was shocked to read that. Imagine having him and lukaku up top.

Hopefully instead of selling Stones we add 2 more to this age group each year.

We were very obviously not in for Dier, and were not going to get him even if we were. There's no way we would've let him go after that short stint in the ressies, if there was ever a real chance of keeping him.

You guys remember how every rag in the country talked like Stones would have been Chelsea player after those bids.. no questions asked.
HA-HA-HA! koff

His transfer request last Sumner, you ebelieve he change his mind and now wants to play for us for the next 4 years

Not at all mate, but I also don't think it's a given he wants away. He obviously got his head turned in the summer, but he never said (even after his request was denied) that he wouldn't play - he's not one to throw his toys out of the pram, basically.

I think that we'll be hard pushed to keep him next summer if he has a good Euros. And if Barca, Madrid, Bayern came calling then you'd have to let the lad leave.

But whatever it'll be on our terms and we'll get massive money for him. He's worth that. And if not he'll stay and it'll be all the better!

But we didn't sign them. It's like saying you can't believe we didn't sign Ronalod when he was at Sporting.

You can't have every youth player who shows a lot of potential. Alli is a London lad as well, Spurs was an ideal move for him and I'm glad he's doing well. It's a shame we never went back in for Dier but, again, it's football. We've got a very good young squad that is equally as talented as Spurs' - the one thing it lacks is a real playmaker like Eriksen that would push us the next level IMO.
