How about Lawton, Hickson, Collins, Ball, McKenzie, Latchford, Lineker, Steven, Stevens... Ffs the lists could be endless they can't all be Kenwrongs fault Joe!

But you know that as well as me, in fact better, than me mate. Just some people like to make it out as some sort of new thing Everton selling good players, suits their agenda they're trying to push I suppose.
All clubs sell Doug if the price is right even the red lot!

Agreed, the one crucial difference being that in Spain, Italy or Germany you can have a good season get into the top 4 and then build from there. In any other league our 13/14 season would have resulted in champions league football then you can continue to add from a position of strength. That's what Atletico and Dortmund did well.

You're right though that Atletico got themselves out of midtable obscurity through their one great youth product Torres. When they sold they always bought a direct single replacement. Aguero, Falcao, Costa, Griezeman. It's always ensured they had at least one world class player upfront without much added investment from the original Torres windfall. We split the Rooney and Lescott windfalls on good players but none of that quality or who had any resale value. Good for the squad but not for the team. Shrewd signings have rescued the situation somewhat as we were able to sell Fellaini and reinvest it all in Lukaku. We now have Stones Barkley Lukaku who would produce huge windfalls if sold. We need to learn our lessons though and use it to buy top quality not a quantity of squad players.

different manager, different ethos. Not dissing moyes' transfer ability, that would be stupid, but he was more inclined to spend transfer money on players that would keep us solid. When we sold lescott he went and spent half of it on distin and heitinga. I mean, okayish players, but nothing that was going to make us pull up any trees.

Martinez just seems to view things differently, you see lukaku, deulofeu, galloway, eto'o, as well as bringing through barkley and stones etc - he seems to want to bring in players with the ability but also the confidence to succeed at the highest level. They have a better mentality to take us to the next step rather than just keep us solidified in that 5th-8th area.

every team sells, like others said look at Ronaldo leaving United for Madrid. technically every club outside of Real,Barca, and Bayern are "a selling club". We'll never sell Stones in a winter window. If he ever does leave in a summer window, I'd prefer early and to Barca rather than a prem team. Keeping him would be great obviously.

Hate this thread, its like we all know what the outcome will be next summer. That dreaded feeling that he will be wearing a kit with another badge next season. We should get around 45 million for him. Hopefully Martinez got his best scouts out looking for a replacement.

You are aware that under Kenwright the clubs posted record profits, turnover and god knows how many times broken the record transfer fee...

Are you unaware however even as far back as the 40's Everton sold their star players for profit.

'If ya know ya history...' Changy.
I don't mind that you are unaware Douglas. I forgive you.

We'd all love him to stay, flourish further at the club and lead us to great success (hopefully as our captain), yet we've got to be realistic.

Stones isn't just a good player: I think he will be one of the world's best defenders; if not the best. He will be at the likes of Real, Barca or Bayern.

I wouldn't begrudge him the opportunity to play at that level, even if it may be difficult to lose him. Well as long as we get big, big bucks for him.

As you mention though, I hope Martinez has already began searching for a replacement as he'll be a huge loss.

Tbf the first sentence is purely down to the TV deals

Different situation too with the TV deal and the starting point of the squad.

Martinez took over a team that has spent the last decade in the top 8 and was able to spend £28m on a striker.

Moyes took over a squad with 1 top half finish in the past decade and a transfer budget of a championship club.
