That loses some of it's impact when you consider it's £32M for a player who plays only when he hasn't got a gob on.

I'd be very happy to have him as 3rd choice. I'm glad we're not taking any chances with that position and have learned from last season. Pre-season and transfer business seem to have been conducted last summer's/season's failings in mind.

He's very experienced, still young, is a good defender and apparently could handle our passing game. Sounds like what we need.

£8m is a bit much for me though. I'd spend maybe £5-6m max on him, but I doubt it'll be as high as £8m anyway.

United fan here. Have to say the fee's a bit absurd - he's barely worth £4m let alone double. Along with that, we seem to get rid of our players for peanuts so it's insane how much he's going for (we're selling van Persie for only £4m or so.)

But just wanna say that a couple of years ago he seemed to be an extremely good and mature defender. He's since been hampered with injuries quite badly, it often seems that he's made out of glass, and it took its toll and he lost his way a bit. After he couldn't get his starting spot back (Jones, Smalling, even Paddy McNair started over him!), he always seemed to be an absolute state at the back and the fans were always nervous when he was on the pitch. But perhaps with regular game time, he could come back to the defender that so many were hopeful for.

i have no problem with buying united players btw. That club installs a winning mentality into players and they carry it through their careers which breeds confidence. we seen it with neville here - we all know he wasn't vastly talented or anything but he'd step up confidently in high pressure situations like pen shootouts and became our captain.

...please don't single out the wigan game - he was past it by then and moyes should never have picked him.
