2018/19 Jordan Pickford

This all day long.
Is he a good shot stopper? Yes
Does he kick the ball out of play too many times and make errors? Yes

There's a reason Chelsea bought there keeper, rather then Pickford who would of been cheaper.

But this is good, it means Pickford has a good chance of staying for here many years. It's like walcott, he is very effective here, but man city would never buy him

How'd you figure this one out? He wasn't for sale under any circumstances.

I think for players like Pickford, who have a mentality that could generously be described as being "extremely confident", it is important for the fanbase to be a "criticial friend" (or frandel) to him.

We will make him a better player.

But he wasn't at fault for the goals yesterday?

First one was a great, thumping finish. So low down to his left that they're hard to stop.

The second goal - Henderson and super Joe Gomez have completely switched off at the near post.

No, he wouldn't. And it's "have", not "of".

He probably could have saved the first one. Not a mistake by any means but he could have kept it out.

On a side note he's started diving about nowhere near the ball for the cameras. It's completely needless and he needs to knock it on the head.

It is just that some folk like to have someone to criticize and the more of them the merrier. I reckon at least 5 of our players are regular targets for slagging off. Pickford, Gueye, Davis, DCL, Schneiderlin. Are they above criticism? No but the slagging is relentless. Have I joined in sometimes? Yes. Why does it happen so often? Because there is an agenda which follows the theme that everything the Everton hierarchy, chairmen, board, managers etc do, or have done for some years is by definition incompetent.

If he keeps that out Tim, it's one of the best saves he's made. He'd have had to tip it wide or over because even if he'd parried it, it'd be straight back out into the danger zone.

And no, on your second point, you have no idea if that's what he's doing. Maybe the goalkeeping coach at Everton is instructing that? No need for sweeping assumptions.

He's been at fault for one of our goals this season. He's said himself that as a team defensively we need to improve - and he's right and he's included in that - but he's a brilliant young goalkeeper and it's weird from Evertonians on the whole to be so hypercritical.

When he's done something wrong, there's nothing wrong with saying so. Like most did after the Wolves game.

Good keeper, still has a lot learn & will continue to make mistakes...needs to practice collecting the ball from crosses & corners, commanding his six yard box & better decision making on rushing out of his goal...

& Just remember....

A good keeper makes spectacular saves look good....
A spectacular keeper makes good saves look spectacular...

You can literally critique any keeper in the world. The bloopers reel just for this year alone from De Gea, Lloris, Neuer, Buffon etc. would look horrendous. All keepers make mistakes. I don’t know why some Everton fans feel the need to beat on the one decent keeper we’ve had since Martyn when not that many people seemed bothered that starfish Timmy was basically like starting 1 down every game.

I'm just saying what I see. It doesn't mean I don't think he's good. In fact I think he's extremely good. That's why I want to see him concentrating properly and less of the dramatics.

Howard was decent for a few years to be fair to him, but there in lies the difference. You question why Pickford is criticised, and claim he is miles better than anyone we've had for years, but in doing so, criticise Howard. He was by no means spectacular, and of course he made mistakes, as you rightly pointed out. But he was never able to live them down or redeem himself, despite being, for the most part, a reliable, consistent presence who's record was pretty good.

Pickford on the other hand, gets talked up like he's some kind of saviour before he's proved anything. Like I said before, the criticism as you put it, is simply people seeing a keeper who averages 60+ goals conceded in 2 consecutive seasons, someone who makes the odd spectacular save that he has no right to make, but who can be erratic, doesn't keep it simple and keeps very few clean sheets. Criticise the defenders all you like, but like Howard before him, he is part of that defensive unit, not separate from it.

I made the point a number of times about Joel, and he got it so much worse than Pickford ever did, with not even a fraction of the plaudits. He transformed the defensive performance of our team for the better in 3 consecutive seasons, under different managers, replacing different goalkeepers, and behind different defenders, yet got zero credit for it. In fact, on each occasion, according to fans, we improved in spite of Joel, and it was all the defences doing, even though we had been poor with the same unit prior to his inclusion.

Again, Joel is another who was steady yet not spectacular, and again, made the occasional gaff, but got way more than his fair share of criticism for it, to the point that no one would trust him or allow him to improve or redeem himself either.

Im not saying Pickford won't be good, and I'm not saying I don't want him to be good. He has the potential to be much better, and maybe our long term solution to a key position. But I'm certainly not of the opinion that he is anywhere near the level yet as some will have you believe.

For me, he has a long way to go to even reach Howard levels yet, regardless of whether he has the potential to be better or not, and the odd spectacular save won't convince me otherwise, until he becomes the steady, calming influence, all good keepers are, and becomes part of a reliable defensive unit. For me at the moment, he is still far too rash and his distribution and decision making is questionable. But hopefully, that will come with experience.

He won Player of the Year for 2017-18, Players' Player of the Year and the Young Player of the Year. He then followed that up by playing a crucial role in England getting to a World Cup semi-final.

He's 24.

It's not a bad first season.
