2018/19 Jordan Pickford

I saw that on Twitter with his comments and then the aforementioned gif of him doing that turn last night.

Hopefully he does what Alisson has done, brush it off as a one off and keep it simple and not complicate his game.
After he gifted one to West Ham I think it was earlier this season, didn’t he say he was just going to put his foot through it from now on?

To begin, you blame who has made the error whether it is Pickford or whoever else has made the error. Every goal that is conceded is not the goalkeepers fault entirely. Sometimes, believe it or not, it could just be a really good finish (Alcacer's header last night for example).

Secondly the view point that goalkeepers have a single role nowadays is absolutely medieval. They are trusted to do much more than stop the round thing going in the goal.

This post, as with a lot that gets posted in this thread (not just by yourself), is not a balanced reflection of Pickford's ability, it's just shouting an incredibly biased opinion as loudly as you can over and over again.

If Pickford does something wrong. Go ahead slate him all you want. But if you do that then imo you have to commend him when he does something right otherwise you just look like you have an agenda.
Go back in this thread and you’ll see that I do talk warmly about him when he does well. He’s not a terrible keeper, but he isnt close to the keeper some proclaim him to be, which is why we need him to improve ASAP or buy us a better keeper.

And medival or not, a keeper main job is to goalkeep, and thats what Ill judge him on. If you think a good long ball now and then is worth more than clean sheets, thats fine, but I dont agree with your judgment at all.

Edit:
I agree with your first point, blame where blame is due. Not every goal is Pickfords’ fault, but too many are, which is why we need better.

So its okey to blame every other player than the one whos single role in the team is stoping balls from getting in the net, when a ball goes in the net? How in the world is a keeper letting in I dont even know how many goals since joining us not to blame, but everyone else is? I know a lot of people have high hopes for Jordan, but come one!
He isnt what a lot of our fans want him to be, and unless he improves dramatically, he never will. He’s going on 25, having played 2-3 full seasons in the prem. If he hasnt improved dramatically over the two seasons we’ve had him, I dont understand why anyone would think he suddenly will. Jordan is fairly average, with a good save in him here and there, but thats about it.

Did you even read what he said, which is 100% correct?

Quite a few questions for you here mate...

So its okey to blame every other player than the one whos single role in the team is stoping balls from getting in the net, when a ball goes in the net?

So what is the role of a CB and how does it differ to a GK mate? Or any defender for that matter? And what about holding midfielders like Kante? Tackling is literally a method of goal prevention.

How in the world is a keeper letting in I dont even know how many goals since joining us not to blame,

This seems quite black and white. What about the shades of grey? That he has been responsible for some goals but our mistakes last season with the ball, off the ball, as a collective unit were also to blame.

To be really basic about this, the goal is massive. So if an attacker is getting a free shot off under no pressure, then it's difficult for any keeper to save it. It doesn't matter if that's De Gea, Lloris, Buffon etc. So the art of defending is ensuring free shots are kept to a minimum and from that point, how many saves can your keeper mate.

So i'd ask you to take a look at the goals we conceded last year. How many were free shots? How many of those did he save? Then look at how many your eyes tell you weren't free shots or were shots poorly executed that he should have saved.

Goals conceded isn't the metric to use in isolation for a goalkeeper. If it was, why did West Ham buy Fabianksi? Why did Burnley, who finished above us last season, buy Joe Hart? Why did Wolves buy Rui Patricio when their keeper had such an excellent season the year before?

He isnt what a lot of our fans want him to be, and unless he improves dramatically, he never will.

I'd be interested to know what exactly you believe our fans want him to be? And, given the above about properly and contextually assessing a goalkeeper, what he needs to improve dramatically on that games and experience won't provide? Look at De Gea in his first couple of seasons at Utd- did anyone then believe he would become the best keeper in the world? What makes him the best keeper? Because in the WC his shot / save ratio was horrendous.

Jordan is fairly average, with a good save in him here and there, but thats about it.

Even if that is true, which i don't believe it is, aren't we as a team pretty average? So he certainly fits a team in 10th place this season and 8th last season?

If you've got time, in order to contextualise what you mean by average, could you let us know whether you think the following keepers are better or worse than our Jord'?

Ederson
Kepa
Allison
Cech
Lloris
Begovic
Patricio
De Gea
Foster
Schmeichel
Hart
Ryan
Hennessey
Fabianski
McCarthy
Bertinelli
Hamer
Dubravka
Etheridge

...and here lies the problem people have in this thread and others on this forum. Everything has to be an extreme. Black or white. Incredible or awful. There's no inbetween.

Great post mate, put into better words than I could/could be bothered to muster.

That's really pushing credibility to be honest.

Yes there's more to goalkeeping than shotstopping - that's not a new development, there always has been - but the prime job of a goalkeeper is undoubtedly to stop his team from conceding goals, otherwise you'd be better off with a midfielder in goal really.

That’s also the primary job of the defence too, but certain systems still demand centre backs that can pass the ball.

But as said above mate, the prime job of a defender is to defend yet how many times do we talk about quality defenders? Instead, we talk about Walker's agility, Van Dijk on the ball, Trippier's crossing. I think the point that is being made is, if we contextualise defenders for their other attributes, why can't we do that with goalkeepers?

All very true, but I don't think the poster meant that stopping the ball going into the net is literally the sole job of a goalkeeper, just that that is fundamentally what he's there to do. In the same way that we would say a striker is there to score, or a midfielder needs to get involved in general play.

Good distribution is a nice trait in a goalkeeper, but i'd much rather they were generally 'safe' in terms of shotstopping, commanding their area etc. Obviously the same applies to defenders, which is why we haven't decided to give Lookman a run out right back while Coleman's out.

Should never have opened his mouth the other week about Allison and saying that he doesn't get caught out with the ball at his feet cos he has been since and he's not been in the best of form all season.

The club provided him with no competition for his starting spot. Retaining Stekelenburg was just like them saying to him: "If you can do well for us that's great. If not, then you're the England GK and we can at least get publicity."

He's responded to that.

January we need a very good GK to take over from him if need be. The quality of the January acquisition will be determined by how well Pickford in the next two months turns this form around and starts performing like the GK he's reputed to be.

Whos available and better than what we have?
