2018/19 Jordan Pickford

In literally his first game he won it for us with a save in the last second against Shaqiri

There are some weak areas we need to improve in our team that we need to improve on but Pickford is far from being one of them and he's only going to get better
Never seen him for Everton have one of those games where literally everything is repelled and he makes save after save to earn us the points. Never.

Anything that gets in and around the 6 yard box/penalty area will get past him. His reactions are sloth-like. Look at those goals conceded last night. He dives after the ball is past him.

He needs to be a lot better than this. He's lived a charmed existence in an England shirt so far, but anyone outside Everton wondering why he did what he did last night should look to his shocking decision making for this club this season. The reality is that, unfortunately, the lad is not that switched on.

Anybody notice how many times de Gea put the ball into touch by clearing his lines when under pressure, hence losing possesion? Yes, Jordan got very very lucky last night, but the first goal was down to him trying, and succeding, to play from the back.

It's a fair point and very important when you're in a team that plays like England did last night. Quickly moving the ball out to capitalise on very little possession and bypassing the press can't be done by punting it in touch or just getting rid.

The Cruyff turn was a moment of madness and I can't see he went into the game thinking about doing that. Every single player has those "What was he thinking?" moments from time to time and I'll take our keeper having them in an England shirt over an Everton shirt any day of the week.

Fair comment Eggs.

Like opinion with a lot of our players on here. He's either absolutely brilliant or absolutely crap. When the truth is, as usual, somewhere in the middle.

In goalkeeping terms he is still very young. Even at this age he is the best keeper we have had since Martyn and Southall, but he still has a lot to learn before he is classed as good as them. In my opinion he will never be as good as Nev who has to go down as one of the best keepers in the world, ever. So there's absolutely no shame whatsoever in not reaching those heights.

I understand your concerns with him Eggs, but the game is changing and Jordan epitomises what is required from the modern day keeper. I also think that, once Silva get's his own team together, he will fit snugly into the style of football we will be playing. I also think his attitude is great. He's a winner and a leader. People saying otherwise must have some sort of agenda or are just massive WUMs. Yes, he still has a lot to learn, but he has time on his side and I have no doubt he will improve. The way the money in the game is going I wouldn't be at all surprised if he became the first £100m keeper.

As regards last nights game, I think it's fair to say that we saw both the best and worst of Jordan. His distribution directly led to the first 2 goals, but we also saw a couple of mistakes that could very easily have led to goals against, but he was lucky enough to get away with both. I felt a bit sorry for him with the first one. He got a bobble just before he was going to clear and the ball then got stuck between his legs. I don't think he pre-planned the Cruyff turn and it isn't something I've seen from him before, so it isn't something that overly concerns me. I am more concerned about the second error when he parried the ball out into the path of the Spanish forward, and was lucky to see it rebound wide. This is something we see far too often from the lad and I'm not sure whether it is technical issue, but I'm sure our keeping coach is working on it and hopefully it will be ironed out sooner rather than later.

...I think the first mistake was more to do with poor game management. England had just conceded and needed to play safe. He had ample time to clear but waited and waited until he was closed down. With his confidence, I expect he was looking and waiting for another defence splitting pass, but he should’ve been low risk and punted it downfield to safety.

He appeared to get in the routine of parrying lots of balls that came his way last night. I accept he’s new regime of keeper and i’m ok with that but i’m uneasy with him. I’m sure he’ll be fine, folk who know lots more than me about goalkeeping (including our coaching staff) clearly think he’s the real deal.

Seeing things on Twitter about his comments that he'll never do Cruyff turns in the box with aforementioned gif of him Cruyff turning in the box.

I hate social media.

Having seen it, he went to dribble the ball, it got stuck to his feet and he tried to turn his way out of trouble. Fantastic recovery challenge but it is expected that keepers who play out will have the odd hairy moment.

He does conceded too many but I can barely think of more than three errors he has made that have led to goals or shots he should have saved. Our defence is just terrible but this season things will improve and pick will get more clean sheets.

If that was the case there would deffo be a lot of goals scored in that World Cup

He does this all the time Eggs. It's the way he plays the game and probably also the way his manager(s) want him to play. He's comfortable on the ball and is always looking for an out ball, but he rarely, if ever, get's caught in possession. If he's already under pressure when he receives the ball he normally just hoofs it, which is what you would want him to do.

As I said, in this case, the ball took a wobble just before he was going to kick it. You could see that from his body position. It was more bad luck than anything. He then had the choice of kicking it sideways into touch or trying to turn the attacker, but with the ball being stuck between his legs it was difficult to do either. You could say that he then made the wrong decision and I wouldn't argue with you. In his defence he recovered well, but there was no doubt that he was very lucky to get away with it, and could easily have given away a penalty AND been sent off..

A very good and well balanced post.

You are 100% right when you say that he " epitomises what is required from the modern day keeper ".

It`s become a prerequisite that all top keepers are comfortable with the ball at their feet - " the sweeper keeper ".

The difference between the keeper and any othere outfield player, is that the only thing behind the keeper is an open goal.

So when mistakes are made, the end result is a goal 99% of the time and the keeper looking like an idiot.

Just watched the England game on catchup, the co-commentator (Alan Smith ?) had it in for him and back in the studio they were proper taking the piss out of him in a kind of "isn't he eccentric" type of way. Ian Wright whilst being OTT had a point about the diving around, especially after the ball is past him.
