2020/21 Jordan Pickford

Probably wouldn’t play against Newcastle anyway because he can’t control himself from doing something stupid against them. Doesn’t have the temperament for top level goalkeeping.
We'd be mad to let him play against Newcastle straight after last night's howler. He's FAR too emotional for a keeper and I don't see any evidence that he's technically or physically better than Olsen.

I don’t think he is better than Olsen but I think Carlo is trying not to upset the apple cart too much. Dropping Pickford causes a huge media storm with him as England number 1 and the valuation of him as an asset on our books would absolutely plummet. He’s not the sort of bloke you’d want moping round the training sessions either. He needs to be gradually phased out and in fairness Olsen is starting more games now, which has gone relatively unnoticed by the media. Needs to get to the point where England stop picking him and that’s on Southgate not us, then he wants to move to be playing every single week, then we sell at a decent value. Unfortunately we have to put up with his mistakes in the meantime.

Mate, that makes an awful lot of sense - a much bigger picture that I hadn't considered.

Still wouldn't start him against the Horse Punchers though - they will all be winding him up verbally from the first minute and he'll lose what little focus he currently has.

What you are saying makes sense and is probablywhat is happening. But there comes a tipping point where his performances are costing us points to the detriment of league position and I'm not sure we can live with it for another half season.

I don't think that Pickford playing well is sufficiently good to live wit the mistakes.

I also can't see any obvious candidate to buy him in the summer. Unfortunately.

What I cant bear is when people call our own players all the names under the sun because they dont rate them as a footballer.

Last night wasnt great and maybe the straw that broke the camels back for some but that wasnt the worst mistake Ive ever seen not by a long way. Plenty of players in front of him, saw it late, skiddy surface. He should have saved it and he was very close to putting it off the post and clear.

I personally think hes been much improved this season since being pushed by Olsen and taken out of the limelight. Hes been far more dependable and his distribution has been close to his first season standards.

I think the fact people dont like him plays a big part as well.

People on this forum don't like him because he's a calamitous player. It's not as if we all hang out with him and have experienced a personality clash - "Here, that Jordan's a decent keeper but I can't stomach his views regarding brexit. We should get rid."

This scenario is so irksome. It was extremely evident even before the last transfer window, he wasn't capable of being a top tier goalkeeper. Yet Everton embarked on a futile effort to rehabilitate and salvage his career, by bringing in competition. They could of averted this calamity through an actual replacement not another backup.

2 things

1. Carlo has improved several players who I previously would have happily sold on for peanuts....so was always worth being patient and seeing of he could work his magic on pickford.

2. It may be that we identified a shortlist of potential goalkeepers to replace pickford, but none of those deals came off last summer. So we brought in backup as a last minute Plan B.

I have zero doubt Carlo now has spoken with Brands and Moshiri, and said get me a new Number 1 this summer.

Our 3 priorities this summer will be a Keeper, a right back, and a striker.
Takes time to build a squad, but we're certainly much closer to one that can finally challenge

Ancelotti’s job is to get results though, not pander to the England media. Southgate is a complete moron, he will never drop Pickford unless he’s been dropped by us and isn’t playing. He could concede 100 goals and get us relegated, he’d still play every game for England because Southgate feels some kind of loyalty towards players that played in the World Cup. The onus is on us to rid him from the team, this should start right now.

I fully believe Carlo is here for the long run and he’s thinking for the future and this is exactly the kind of thing he’d consider that a more ‘I need success now’ kind of manager would not. If we can get in Europe with Pickford playing as much as he has done, hopefully he gets dropped for Pope (who keeps winning MOTM awards) by England and we can move him on quietly in the summer with less media hysteria about ‘England’s number one’
