2020/21 Jordan Pickford

What I cant bear is when people call our own players all the names under the sun because they dont rate them as a footballer.

Last night wasnt great and maybe the straw that broke the camels back for some but that wasnt the worst mistake Ive ever seen not by a long way. Plenty of players in front of him, saw it late, skiddy surface. He should have saved it and he was very close to putting it off the post and clear.

I personally think hes been much improved this season since being pushed by Olsen and taken out of the limelight. Hes been far more dependable and his distribution has been close to his first season standards.

I think the fact people dont like him plays a big part as well.
It's not about the singular mistake, It's the CONSTANT mistakes from Pickford, He's not picking himself is he, Ancelotti is so it's not all just Pickford's fault. As people have said 3 mistakes in that passage of player when they scored, three! I would have binned him off after Brighton personally specially when Fleetwood wasn't long before that.

I don’t think he is better than Olsen but I think Carlo is trying not to upset the apple cart too much. Dropping Pickford causes a huge media storm with him as England number 1 and the valuation of him as an asset on our books would absolutely plummet. He’s not the sort of bloke you’d want moping round the training sessions either. He needs to be gradually phased out and in fairness Olsen is starting more games now, which has gone relatively unnoticed by the media. Needs to get to the point where England stop picking him and that’s on Southgate not us, then he wants to move to be playing every single week, then we sell at a decent value. Unfortunately we have to put up with his mistakes in the meantime.
I mean, doesn't look like Chelsea give a flying with their complete flop and Pickford is worse than Kepa.

I'm not really comfortable with the idea of paying a manager £10m a year or whatever he's on and him having to rely on a different manager to drop players first to make his job 'easier'. I'm also not entirely comfortable with the idea of paying a director of football at all if the best solution they can find to our goalkeeper problem is to lash £50m at Burnley for Nick Pope. Other than that, great shouts everyone.

Mick - he has marginally improved & has been extremely luck to get away with an awful lot of errors this season, through us winning despite them or a few flukes along the way he has ridden his luck with.

last night was not a howler, but is a prime example of his averageness, it's a save 90% of keepers make at this level all of the time, but not JP. There is no point in dressing it up under the skiddy surface or bodies in front of him, the reality is his body positioning (he should have been behind it) a basic fundamentals caused the error - nothing else

It has caused us two points & three vs one of our key rivals for top 4; the only saving grace is it hasn't been as bad as expected this season.

Dont agree?

I was wondering where to start with it all. Firstly, I’d say he’s made more mistakes this season than in any other season he’s been here, which puts the bed the idea he’s been more dependable.

Secondly, I don’t think the idea that he “nearly tipped it onto the post” does him any favours, as it shows he got down to the shot in plenty of time and got enough of a hand on it to keep it out. This also disproves the idea that he saw it late.

Finally the assertion that he isn’t liked in the fanbase is true, and it’s because he’s a terrible goalkeeper, not because his name has been randomly drawn out of a hat to be the subject of our ire.

tl;dr version: yes, I disagree with all of it.

I don't believe the fans reaction is knee jerk at all. After the famous origi derby the club should have planned for his exit. He has only gone downhill since then with the odd match where he has look decent. He has had enough time and we have a keeper on the bench who seems solid and deserves a run or games.

If you are small keeper you need to be extraordinary to play at a top level and this fella does not have the mindset for that. Olsen is a decent shot stopper and is tall enough to catch the odd cross. That's all we need at the mo.

Howard was excellent for us for 3-4 seasons. Started going downhill about 2011. But people only remember the bad times.

Gerrard and Simonsen would be the most accurate. Simonsen both so as they both broke British Transfer records for GK and they’re both garbage

If I was going to compare Pickford to any of our previous goal keepers, it`d be Richard Wright.

Not in personality, as Wright was quite a quiet fella, but in the fact that they were both good shot stoppers, both shaky as hell in the air and both prone to massive howlers on a fairly regular basis. Plus they both unsettled the defence.

Gerrard and Simpson were just poor to average keepers. Gerrard getting lucky and was playing a league above his ability and Simonsen was part of a dodgy deal with Peter Johnson and Tranmere.

The sad thing is, that the last all round, truly great goal keeper we had was Nigel Martyn.

If we`re gonna replace Pickford, we have to break the bank this time.

He makes far too many mistakes and repeats the same mistakes.

He makes defenders nervous with the way he goes about his business. It's like he's constantly on edge and short of confidence.

Wants to be a showtime keeper, feels the need to go looking for ways to get involved in the game. It’s why he rushes out for no reason and dives for shots that are going nowhere near the goal. He’s tapped in the head, I can’t wait til I don’t have to watch him ever again, gives me bad anxiety.

We definitely don’t have to break the bank to buy an upgrade on Pickford. We already have one at the club who’d cost £5m absolute tops.
