2020/21 Jordan Pickford

All the other ‘decent’ goalkeepers are making huge errors though. Simon letting it run under his foot, Lloris punching someone, Dubravka putting it in his own net etc. England goalkeepers in the past have all made huge errors at key moments as well in tournaments. The keeper who avoids mistakes and is making good saves is not just playing decent, he’s hitting a standard that hardly any other keeper in the tournament has reached, maybe only Donurumma and Courtois, and they’re two of the best in the world.
It's not over yet,one slip and the media will be all over him. When they go out it'll be scapegoat time. As I said solid performance, but nothing outstanding.

But good goalkeepers do that consistently and don't make mistakes. He's demonstrating at least that - consistency and cutting out errors. ON top of that if you make some unexpected saves that's all you need!
Did you see anything "unexpected"?

I have been Pickford's biggest critic. I wasn't overly impressed at Sunderland and in honesty I was a bit underwhelming when he 1st came here. He then got worse and had a meltdown. However what I will say, is in 2021, probably post the derby he has been fantastic. I got a bit of criticism for saying as much back in February time that he was actually starting to show consistency, but for both club and country he has done very well.

I had a theory in 2018 that he played better in better teams. I think that is starting to be borne out. His best performances have been for England, but England are a team who expect to challenge to win trophies. Sunderland was a bit of a horror show as a team as were we under Koeman, so you can understand someone (wrongly) thinking it doesn't matter how they play and that 1 good game 1 bad game is enough.

I put something on twitter a few days ago to say he has gone level 4th with most clean sheets at a tournament. He is not 4th on his own. David Seaman hadn't even played for England when he was Pickford's age. I don't think Shilton had either. Only Shilton, Banks and Seaman are ahead of him. By the time he is finished he is going to go down as one of England's all time best goalkeepers.

I liked Pickford when he first arrived, I thought the 17/18 season whilst difficult for Everton he actually played quite well. He then had a very good World Cup. I think the almost negative reaction to that bothered his form afterwards. He’d just had a brilliant World Cup and the media just seemed to want to pounce on any error he made to prove he shouldn’t be England number 1. I can’t remember them ever doing this with Hart or Robinson who could also have poor spells of form. It led to him trying far too hard in my view, and then when the Origi error happened (which I still don’t blame him for) it was like Christmas had come for his opponents. I think that then culminated in the Van Dijk incident (again not his fault in my view) where he became public enemy number 1 for the kopite media. Carlo did probably the best thing for him taking him out of the spot light and giving him some decent competition. Since he’s been back in the team from the Anfield derby onwards he’s been absolutely spotless.

Unless an English goalkeeping prodigy appears next season, and Pickford’s form falls off a cliff, or Southgate resigns, he is almost certain to be England goalkeeper at the next World Cup. Very few English keepers have made three consecutive tournaments as number 1. Certainly Seaman and Hart two of the others made a host of errors that Pickford hasn’t. Like you said, it’s very likely he will go down as one of the great English goalkeepers in history.

I though Pickford did well when he first came but was nowhere near as good as people thought (in my view). I just felt he was the best of a very bad bunch. I don't think of many games he had won us. We are a bit spoilt having seen Southall and even Nigel Martyn but that was the standard I would set. I mean peak Southall is almost an impossible standard.

I seem to remember him after that world cup having a go at Alisson for making a mistake and really bringing it on himself. He then started making mistakes, I remember a couple against West Ham and he had opened the door for himself. I'd be interested why you didn't blame him for the Origi winner? I kind of forgave him that, but really lost it with him at Newcastle, as he just looked like he was messing about to me. We could have got Europe that season, and losing those 3 points was quite quite critical at that stage. You ally that to him being seen out drinking and messing about at the darts, and he just looked unfocussed.

I actually think Ancelotti did a wonderful job with him and really showcased his man management. I think Pickford had probably gone by that stage and he really brought him back. As much as I am very critical, I also hold my hands up when a player does well. I suppose I'm a natural contrarian. I thought he was excellent in our run in, and has shifted a lot of views, and he's been even better in this tournament. It surprises me to here people talking about just "decent" saves. He makes really difficult saves look quite easy. The save from Havertz was a top draw save. The 1 on 1 he saves is very good, and the 1 on 1 with Muller he does fantastically as was referenced by Klinsman (who is not in the English media circle so can view it objectively).

I said about 18 months ago, my worry for him was that Ederson had just developed to levels above him, even though they were quite close at 23. I think he's gone a long way to closing that gap over the last 6 months. He's been very good and seems to be getting better with age and maturity. I am having to eat a lot of humble pie and you know that's the best dish I enjoy eating when players prove me wrong for the right reasons.

I don’t blame him for the Origi one because I think it’s a freak incident. Dubravka for example palms the ball into his own net when he was in control of the situation, that’s a bad error in my view. Pickford though, the ball spooned up in the air unnaturally and basically came down vertically on the top of the bar. What he’s tried to do is see it over the top of the bar but he’s hit the bar when doing so and then the ball has bounced off the top of the bar to Origi.

Now we could be harsh and say he should have read the flight of that perfectly, got up and over the bar and made sure it was over (although we probably would have fumed if they’d scored from the resulting corner at him putting a ball over the bar that looked like it was going over). Or we accept that it was a slight error to just cover his goal from the shot and think that the ball would bounce behind rather than back into play.

The incident has been retrospectively changed into one where Pickford somehow stopped a ball that was going out of play and put it onto Origi’s head. I’m not sure he actually touched the ball at all. I think he went to cover his goal, messed up by hitting the bar, and then got unlucky from the bounce of the ball from the strangest looping shot you’ll ever see. An error maybe, bad luck yes, disappointing definitely, but he’s made far worse errors than that one for us and most keepers will make a bigger mistake than that in a single game.

Any Kopite having a laugh over Benny and ongoing appointment, just get talking about Jordan and derby performances, their big heads wobble off. And naughty blues who got taken in by the kopite witch hunt, we remember!

Surely his mistake was seemingly trying to catch the ball, rather than just tip it over for a corner though?

Saw one last night saying he still cant forgive him for saint virgil.
He got absolutely slaughtered. It was a joy to watch fans of other clubs laugh aswell.
