Define elite keeper? Not an elite keeper
I don’t get embarrassed at posts on an internet forum my friend. If anything I enjoy the banter and the opinions. I have a life pal.But you said it's rule #1, not an opinion. You've been embarrassed by this:
Actual professional international goalkeepers who know what they're talking about. To blame Pickford is just wrong. Fact.
Listened to a podcast with Rob Green and I think it was Ben Foster, they were discussing goalkeeping myths - they said one of the biggest myths talked about in the media and non goal keeper pundits is the old “shouldn’t get beaten at your near post” cliche.
They talked through what top keepers are taught/coached to do in terms of where to stand/angles etc. and basically dispelled the myth so in summary, you’re spot on. A keeper can be at fault for being beaten at their near post where they get their angles wrong, in the same way they can be at fault getting beaten at the far post if they get their angles wrong. Simply saying - it’s the near post, the keepers at fault - is fallacy.
Love sensible soccerAbsolutely spot on.
You know that other goalkeeper cliche "keepers get better with age"? Thats because their position becomes second nature, being in the right position and having the correct body shape is a huge part of being a good keeper but it comes with years and years of practice.
Apologies for its basic nature, its the best i could do quickly. But look at the diagram below.
If the goalkeeper near the red lines concedes at his near post (to his right) then its an error because he's left too much room between himself and that post. If the goalkeeper near the blue lines concedes at his near post (to his left) then its not an error (assuming its a decent shot) because his positioning is correct.
I know , its quite refreshing to read posts from people who actually know what they are talking about.Love sensible soccer
Define elite keeper?
He might not be the absolute best in the world
You think elite means absolute best? By definition that would mean there’s only ever one elite player for each position and elite is normally a group
We're not an elite club, so he fits in well. Not an elite keeper
Elite literally means one of the best, yes.You think elite means absolute best? By definition that would mean there’s only ever one elite player for each position and elite is normally a group
Elite literally means one of the best, yes.
«a select group that is superior in terms of ability or qualities to the rest of a group or society.»
But I said I think he is one of the best, you just trimmed my quote. I said think he’s probably in the top 25 keepers in world football which I would class as him being an elite goalkeeper. A select group as per your google definition.Elite literally means one of the best, yes.

I’m not pretending, I think he is. I don’t think we’ve had a player as strong as him in his position since Rooney as a kid.No player in our squad is anywhere near an elite player, I don’t know why people feel the need to pretend they are. It’s like we always have to have one elite player at any given time no matter how bad we are, but we simply don’t. And no, being an England international does not make you an elite player, Harry Maguire starts every game for England.

If you disagree, that’s fine.

I also didn’t say being an England international made him elite, I said being the best player in an international final and englands most consistent performer as well as our multiple POTS… not Harry Maguire.
I get that people can disagree but I also think people will agree with me too that Pickford is that good.
