2023/24 Jordan Pickford

“One Pickford long ball signalled the end for Southgate” … so runs the headline in a longish article written by Martin Hardy in today’s Times.

Apparently it was all Pickers fault that England didn’t win the final because one of his long punts went out for a goal kick in the 73rd minute

Haters going to hate
He does it all
The time.

Because our investment is generally poor.
If we were likely to sell, and then buy a keeper who is 90% as good AND a striker who can score 10+ league goals a season, then I'd be all for it.

History suggests that would be unlikely.
Yes this ! That’s all.

Yea I’m not a fan of t-Rex long punt, silly not to cash in on him and improve in other areas by sacrificing a small percentage in one.

Or, given we'd likely end up with a poor keeper and a poor midfielder, it would be silly to sell him if we don't need to for P&S reasons.

Tbf we did go long way too much. Mainly down to Southgate like.
This particular instance was when we had Spain under the cosh and a throw in next to their corner flag ended up at Pickfords feet. Was crazily negative.

For me It really shouldn’t even be a discussion, he could quite easily of moved on in the last few years he’s done an incredible job in them years and been a huge factor in us remaining a premier league side. I’d say his fee has easily been repaid by him and if he was to go for free in a couple of years time then he was a great signing. If we was to get £50m for him we’d be hard pushed to find anyone better plus he’s still got good years ahead of him. Sometimes you don’t realise what you have until it’s gone.

Usually don’t see this viewpoint tossed around but it’s 100% correct. Pickford should have probably been sold at least 2 seasons ago. Keeper remains the most replaceable position.

He’s been fine. I think people get sold on the spectacular saves and just ignore that shot to shot he’s nothing special. He’s weak from long range and always has been (Simons goal in the semi being an example). Not to say he should save that or should save all of them but he misses a higher percentage than most. Then he makes up for it with incredible reflexes.

Basically he’s strong in some areas and weak in others. The word for that is average. If we can sell average players and replace them for less we should be doing it.
