No he's not and no they don't

He's one of only 5 keepers in the whole league who has saved as many shots as he *should* have done, according to those xG ratings

Yes, he is

De Gea, Lloris, Courtois, Cech (although that's becoming debatable) and Ederson - they're the stand out keepers in the league

After that, there's nobody obviously better than him - probably Butland is the one you'd debate as to who is the better of the two

Source - if you wanted the stat...

Good keeper who will only get better. People seem to have forgotten what De Gea was like when he was younger and was making mistakes.

He wouldn't get in at least half the sides in the league. Massively overrated.

And massive lols using sky for stats.

They aren't Sky's stats, they just reported tham

He can improve, but you're watching a different game to me if that's how poorly you rate him

I'd hope he could improve, fact is he's no more than a decent keeper, certainly not a stand out.

If we shopped in Europe you could've got someone equally as capable if not better for a third of the price.

Same goes for butland aswell who's massively overrated because he's English

He's conceded over 60 goals this season alone, and his 'best' attribute kicking is downright abysmal...

It's absolutely ridiculous to use the fact he's conceded as many goals as he has against him. Stats say he's saving what he should be saving, which means you lay the blame for almost all of that at the feet of the rest of the team - allowing for a few where his decision to come or not come for a ball has cost us

Kicking - wouldn't say it was abysmal, certainly when compared to the keepers we've had before him, but it's been nothing to shout about, agreed.

See, I'm not suggesting he's brilliant - stats are saying he's done about what he should be doing. I'd agree with that, but the vast majority of keepers aren't even doing that. He's been good, without being brilliant. I feel calm when he has something to do most of the time, which is a welcome improvement to my nerves over the last decade or more. I'd agree there are probably better keepers out there that we could get if you shopped around Europe, but if you look at the league currently I still say there are only 4 or 5 keepers who are clearly better than him - everyone else is at best debatable. That's as much of an indictment of the quality of keepers in the division as anything else. It's no surprise Liverpool are shopping for a new one

Back to what another poster said though, this season it's because the defence is poor, last season robles did well because the defence was good. Simply isn't true, it's one rule for one and another rule for the other...

Pickford been directly at fault for 2-3 goals in the previous 2-3 games or so. Burnley & Stoke.

He'll be decent one day but on the whole he's been nothing the shout about this season.

The only time I feel calm with Pickford is when he's up against a penalty.

I'm not saying Robles is amazing and Pickford Is crap, same way I dont say Martinez was amazing and Koeman was crap... OK, Koeman was crap, but you get the point. It's the balance that I'm interested in. Being able to see the good and the bad and applying some logic to the pros and cons.

In the case of Joel and Pickford, it is particularly striking.

Pickford, for me, has had an average 1st season for us. Yes he has made some good saves. But we paid £30m for him. That is the very least I would expect for that kind of money. But the flaws in his game are inexplicably excused by some on here who talk about the undoubted qualities he has, how its plain to see how he's going to be a top player. How his young age means he's going to make mistakes and he needs time and games to grow and learn, etc, etc.

Well, Joel was the same age as Pickford when we signed him, and for a fraction of the price. He has yet, in almost 5 years being here, had 1 full season in goal, unlike Pickford, who has played week in, week out from game one (bar the odd meaningless cup/European league game) and conceding 60+ goals in the process.

Another difference between Joel and Pickford, is how each and every error Joel has made, is still held against him, and his young age, lack of experience or fragile defence in front of him has not once been used as a reason to give him some slack and give him the time to develop.

All of this, despite the fact that Joel, when called upon in each of the last 3 seasons, has came into a struggling side and seen an instant and lasting defensive improvement. -That's 3 consecutive seasons, under 2 different managers, and replacing 2 different Goalkeepers in the process. But it's just a coincidence right?

Whenever I have tried to point this out, all I get is the same response, how he was at fault for a shot he didn't save in the Derby that bobbled through a crowded defence and didn't go in anyway.

Most of the criticism Joel gets is based on 3 factors that he has no control over: the manager who signed him and his questionable record in the transfer market, the fact that the Premier league team he played for before signing for us were relegated, and the fact he looks gormless. And yes, before you ask, I am still talking about Joel.

Joel should now be coming into his peak years as a Goalkeeper, and instead, is left to sit on the bench watching Pickford get all the chances he wishes he had had. He is probably going to leave on a free in the summer, and we are going to have to spend more money on a goalkeeper to sit on the bench in his place, and to be honest, at this point in time, I don't believe there's an awful lot between him and our current 1st choice. Maybe we could've spent that £30m on a Striker and a left back, or a centre half to make Joel look better.

Pickford is Ace, all those moaning are very quick to forget he has had Williams, Jags and Keane have been in front if him and Martina to his side, anyone who thinks he has been at fault for a lot of our goals this season must be looing at the score and not the actual match
