All the current keepers parry the ball anywhere, not just Pickford. Presume it's how they're coached. Back in the day they would have been labelled "a clown" for not being able to catch. Is it totally down to the modern ball moving around like the old plastic trophy 5's

Not many in the prem I’d swap him for. Easily better than Karius, Mignolet Cech (the jarg Arsenal version) Ospina. It’s probably only De Gea, Courtois, Emerson and Lloris that are better, and how many clangers does Lloris drop!

Keepers punch the ball way too often these days rather than catching. Even when the ball is moving straight as an arrow. Costs more goals than it saves IMO.

It would only take one game of going back to the standards of Robles or Howard to remind everyone what a good keeper Pickford is. Some Everton fans just can’t handle having good players. Probably the same lot that were saying Baines shouldn’t play for England when he was one of the best in Europe and a geriatric Carragher deserves to go to South Africa ahead of Jagielka. Utterly bizarre mentality amongst some fans.

Pretty sure they'll have worked out that punching is better than catching when the risk of spilling the ball is factored in.
Very British thing to get hung up on too. Like the obsession with "not getting beaten at the near post". Better to get positioned in the best place to minimise a goal not the best place to minimise a goal in a specific area of the goal.
