I really like this guy. He's already go a bit of Everton in him.

Juan Mata: 'I earn an obscene amount of money, and footballers live in a bubble'

Juan Mata last night gave a candid interview on Spanish television in which he discussed the state of modern football and the exorbitant wages he and his colleagues are paid.

Appearing as a guest on the Spanish television programme Salvados, the Spain and Manchester Unitedmidfielder said he understands why football has developed a reputation for greed and over commercialisation.

"Football is very well remunerated at this level," Mata said. "It’s like we live in a bubble. With respect to the rest of society, we earn a ridiculous amount. It’s unfathomable.

Mata can understand why some people are going off the sport
"With respect to the world of football, I earn a normal wage. But compared to 99.9% of Spain and the rest of the world, I earn an obscene amount. The barometer we use for measuring our salaries is comparing them to those of our team-mates and what other players are earning elsewhere.

"I live in a bubble. Real life is the one my friends live. They’ve had to look for work, sign on to the dole and emigrate. That’s normal life now. My life as a footballer is not normal.

"It scares me sometimes to think about just how protected I am. The smallest problem and someone will come and fix it for me. That’s one of the aspects in which we don’t live a normal life".

Mata hates the business side of football
On those who complain about the way modern football is going, Mata said: "I can understand what they’re talking about. The business side of football makes it seem as though the owners are now more important than the fans.

"It’s not like the football of old; there wasn’t as much press coverage before or as many interested parties looking for their cut."
also fears that bad advice and huge salaries are making young players believe they are superstars before they've achieved anything of note on the pitch.

Mata is a popular figure, even with fans of Man Utd's rivals
He added: "Every player thinks he’s Maradona when he joins a big club. That happens to all of us but then you start to notice it in the younger players.

You see kids who think they’re rock stars; wearing extravagant clothes and driving fancy cars… and sometimes you have to take them aside and have a word."

Such a thoughtful take on the world of football will come as no surprise to regular readers of Mata's blog, where the Spaniard's endearingly earnest reflections on life in England has earned him a cult following.

Exactly how highly rated in England is he? Thought he was brilliant in one season at chelsea a few years ago but from what i heard and read hasnt done much at UTD.

As a spaniard i dont think hes ever been linked to any top european sides which they usually are...

Hasn't been played to his strengths at United, put simply. Similar to Rom and Belgium.

Really good read, lad seems very articulate, especially for a footballer!

We need a squad.

Not just XI.
Agreed mate, but the problem is people don't want to see the hard workers, that every squad needs, they just start slagging the manager for not putting all the flair players into the starting 11. Let's hope Koeman gets the balance right and people learn about squad balance.

He's still very highly rated - it's just his consistency that's an issue. He can be untouchable one game, and invisible the next.

Most of that can be put down to Van Gaal and his tactics though probably. As you say, at Chelsea he was brilliant.

He could be amazing for us, or a bit so so - but the point of the transfer would be the statement more than anything.

He looks far better than Witzel!

Is a £21mil signing of Mata a big statement though?

Is he really a 'media favourite' or someone linked to barca^real every summer? Also hasnt he lost his place in the spain squad?

He was player of the season 2 years running at Chelsea mate, in a team including terry, lampard, cole, hazard, ivanovic, Luiz, Oscar, torres, azpilicueta etc

at united hes been managed by david moyes and LVG, two of the most negative coaches going

He is and was rated very very highly
