I don’t disagree we arnt well run but what the point in buying anyone.. look at Iwobi.. spend a fortune on him and 3 years later he good. Villa lad last year. King under Carlo

If we couldn’t get who we wanted then I’d tether we do that then get another mistake

I agree in that sense but you're also potentially sacrificing half a season there. If Dom could stay fit it's a different story but loans were out there to be had for cover at least. Dan James, Amine Harit, Guirassy, Kasper Dolberg etc. all useful for us in the forward position all went on loan and that was just yesterday. Just feel like we're going to be majorly short if Dom can't stay fit.

Dan James who bearly scored a goal, Guirassy an unknown lad in a different league

Everton can’t afford a 15 goal a season striker

You're stance is that we should've bought in a replacement for Dom who's still here though. Was never going to happen.

We've gone from a midfield of:
Davies, Gomes, Allan, Doucoure to:
Onana, Doucoure, Garner, Gana, Allan, Davies (moved Iwobi).

Defence was:
Holgate, Keane, Godfrey, Mina, Coleman, Patterson, Myko
To now:
Tarko, Coady, Mina, Holgate, Keane, Godfrey, Patterson, Coleman, Myko

Forward line:
Dom, Richy, Rondon, Gray, Townsend, Gordon
To:
Dom, Maupey, Grey, McNeil, Townsend, Gordon, Rondon

We've strengthened massively in areas you need to build from. We're lacking that lunch up top (we need Dom back) but in comparison to other teams in the league, we're not adrift striker wise.

Saying that, could be better. But I wasn't expecting things to be solved in one window.
We have an unproven defence and midfield as yet, I wouldnlt start putting those two areas in the 'success' column.

In the past 2 games alone we have had Onana play a through ball to Gray at Brentford to put him 1 on 1, Iwobi through to Gordon Vs Leeds which he scored from and Gordon through to Gray for the marginally offside goal.

That's evidence of us having creativity
All teams can say that they have one or two moments in a game.

We needed a - dare I say it - Rodriguez type.

You can migrate some of Richy goals by conceding less for a start
Then hope Maupay gets 8-10 which is close to Richy last year and then hope Gordon doubles last seasons total of 4.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin the big one an his fitness.

Do you think we be in a relegation battle? I think top 8 still

Yes, because I can't see the goals in the final third.

Last season after 5 games, we scored 10 and conceded 7. We were 6th. 10 points.
This season after 5 games, we scored 4 and conceded 6. We are 17th. 3 points.

It's a bit folly to pay too much attention to the table at this stage, especially when you consider how we nosedived last season but the point is goals scored.

We have a dearth of creativity - people are burying their heads in the sand at the loss and impact of Richarlison. We weren't replacing him, but we've not adequately mitigated the loss.

I've done nothing but advocate Maupay for years on here, but he's not a number 9 and I'm not convinced we've even got the players to play balls through to space for him. We're relying on Calvert-Lewin fitness.

I said last season if Calvert-Lewin was fit every week we'd never have been in a relegation fight. I think the same now, but more so because of losing Richarlison.

Last season at the start we had Richy and DCL this season we had no one. I don’t think we will go 13 games without a win this season. Nor do I see us going from 2-1 up to 5-2 in the same of 8 minutes.
Early signs has shown that we don’t give up when conceding

'If we score the same amount as last season' - a player who has left scored/directly contributed a third of those goals. That's my worry because we were 19th for chances created last season (I wrongly said bottom recently, we just went past Norwich late on).

Sure, we've improved the defence and midfield a lot, but in my (and to be fair, Lampard's) opinion we've gone backwards in the final third. We really, really need Calvert-Lewin to stay fit, and then hope Maupay/McNeil can replace Richarlison's impact, and Gordon goes to another level.
It's a legitimate worry. It looks like we're very likely to get additional production from Gordon. I am very much not predicting he will bang in the fifteen he is currently on pace for. We were at 43 last season, and we look like we're slightly sub-40 on the merits unless Gordon really kicks on. Sub-40 is very chancy to stay up unless we defend like a top 6 side, which is an enormous if even with all the adds. We're defending at that kind of clip now, but we also haven't been pasted by City and Arsenal yet.

What actually bothers me more than the raw numbers is the fact that we got thirteen goals from odd places all over the pitch last season, as well as a bunch of set piece goals (some of which count in both categories), and we have none of those through five fixtures. Our scorers are Gordon (2), Gray (1) and Digne (1), and the last is a former player doing us a solid while cutting out Iwobi. We have the disallowed goal off a corner at Villa for offside, yes, but that's inexperience from Gordon in not realizing that he has to get back onside once it's clear someone else will have the first touch. Someone else is in that space if we have an actual striker on the pitch, and that someone else would instinctively know this. It's a sloppy point to bin off.

New players, OK, players out of position, OK, but we were absolutely reliant on that production last season to stay up. We aren't yet generating it, and if we don't start we're down unless the forwards and Iwobi ninja a bunch of goals out of nothing. That seems very unlikely, for the reasons you outlined.

Who is the big character here now at this club who gets on the ball, fires up the crowd and helps bail us out of a mess?

I dont see one.

That concerns me no end, because I look at this team and wonder where 40 points comes from.
Gordon, Gray

We easy get 40 points
