Agree in Evertons case the DoF role hasn't looked on solid ground so far. Walsh was pushed about by Koeman and there is no way Ancelotti was going to defer to Brands.

I suppose politically it comes down to how much support they have from owner / chairman.
DoFs are there to be ignored.

Any manager who accepts being shackled by one of them I dont particularly want.

I dont believe in the role and never will. An unnecessary layer of bureaucracy.

I have to say that it is pleasing that our DoF and manager are looking at a playing style that is replecated by the junior teams and first team. Previous incumbants have been happy to see the club treated like mutliple clubs, all doing their own thing. Not anymore. ?

My thoughts exactly but I was watching him Saturday And he was always slightly further back than holgate and Tarkowski on 3 occasions I seen Tarkowski telling him to step up so maybe in a four he stays too deep and plays people onside and hasn’t got the pace to recover, that’s the only thing I can think would be the so called reason but I don’t believe a premier league defender playing football for the best part of 20 years can’t play in a 4 or 5.

He says he can do it when questioned about it. Feel it’s odd the way he was even questioned about it by by the club on his media day when joining. Sort of puts pressure on him if he ever does.

I’d be very surprised if he was any worse playing a back four than Keane, Holgate or branthwaite.
He can play in a 4, he won’t refuse to take the pitch in that formation or look like he’s never played the game before or anything.

I think the issue is that he is effectively a sweeper rather than a centre half, so while he’s very good in a 5 he’s probably below average in a 4. It’s just the same as mykolenko being suited to playing full back more than wing back, or McNeil being better playing as a conventional winger rather than a wide forward etc.

I’m not so sure it’s a good thing personally. I know people have always called for it, but I don’t know whether wedding ourselves to a way of playing that isn’t currently in vogue and that the fan base generally doesn’t like is a great plan.

It would be dysfunctional if there is a philosophy being implemented in the first team if the other teams are not producing players who are familiar with and can play in that system. I am not sure on the 3 at the back system but if the pros at the club see it as the way to go then lets see what they can deliver once it has been thoroughly embedded within the staff and in our recruitment.

Time to earn your salary Kevin. It's easy signing 20-year-old midfielders for 30m quid, but what about fixing the most obvious holes in the squad that will lead to our relegation if you're not able to do so?

People always say it’s dysfunctional but it’s not really. If we’re only planning on signing players who usually play in this formation then we’re restricting ourselves to a pretty ridiculous extent. If we’re not then what’s the difference?

I suppose it is a question of perseption. Can any player play succefully in any formation? It would be nice to be able to say yes with certainty but the reality seems to be that they cannot.

We’re sadly infecting by fans who are hooked on transfers like smack and are willing to sell the few decent players we have in order to feed their habit of smack.

Thelwell has a big 10 days ahead.

Technically seven days as its his wedding anniversary tomorrow and he has gone to New York with the better half to see a show on Broadway.

Hopefully he has left a list of targets for people to chase up.
