…i’d be surprised if Lampard is being told to implement a system he’s not content with. Saying that, this is Everton.

If we are playing with 3CBs, we need to get the rest of the formation right.

I think the DOF has a lot to do with it. We bring in someone who was at Wolves when they moved to only using a 3, then we start playing a 3 every week. Feels like too big a coincidence.

I'd like to find out. And any PL CH who cant stretch to working in two systems needs punting anyway.
Of course he can play in a back 4. He is a professional footballer!

I do think people confuse preferring to play in a 3 with failing to pieces because he is playing a couple of yards away from where he normally does.

He says he can do it when questioned about it. Feel it’s odd the way he was even questioned about it by by the club on his media day when joining. Sort of puts pressure on him if he ever does.

I’d be very surprised if he was any worse playing a back four than Keane, Holgate or branthwaite.
Imagine a club comms man having to ask whether a CB just signed can do a CB job of playing in a 3 man or 4 man defence?

The game's gone mad. We cant afford to have that specialised division of labour at Everton. If you're a CB you find a way to make any position work.

It's unbeleivable to me that we have a no mark DoF insisting on a system he wants played and going out and getting a no mark CB to play exclusively that way. I mean, it's poor from Lampard if he's accepted that.

He started the switch to the 3 at the back at Chelsea.

Thelwell's 352 ideology works with Lampard as he likes to play that system.

Last season we didn't have the players, I feel a lot more secure at the back this season - even though we have had loses, this is more down to our inability to score and sign a striker of any ability more then the defence.

He's here on loan. He can stick his preferences where the sun dont shine.

Isn't the whole point of the DOF structure that the manager reports up to the director? So he has to accept it, it's his boss.

I've never liked the structure and don't think it suits english football, or Everton, but there is no point even having a DOF if the manager can overrule them.

I'm pretty sure the reason why they let their great club captain out on loan is that their new manager wants to play with a back 4 and everyone down in the Midlands reckons he's plop in such a set up.

That's not hard and fast as a rule. DoF's can do that, yes. But they can also defer to a manager on all that. Did Koeman get straitjacketed by Walsh? Did Silva get straitjacketed by Brands...did Ancelotti?

Agree in Evertons case the DoF role hasn't looked on solid ground so far. Walsh was pushed about by Koeman and there is no way Ancelotti was going to defer to Brands.

I suppose politically it comes down to how much support they have from owner / chairman.

We’re sadly infecting by fans who are hooked on transfers like smack and are willing to sell the few decent players we have in order to feed their habit of smack.

Thelwell has a big 10 days ahead.
And everton transfer smack is a glorified bag of dip dab.

"Sell Gorden Ev.. lets embarrass ourselves further in the market with that 50 war chest"

More than a few in here feel they could do Mr Thelwell’s job and are auditioning for it through the mediums of hysteria and teenage YouTube scouting with music that all sounds the same.

Good point about Koeman v Walsh and Carlo V Brands, too many strong people all pulling in the direction they belive in.
Thats what i like about Thelwell and Lampard, I cant see either having the Self-imposed status where its all about them, they need to work together with support from the chairmen, i believe they can do it, they just need time
