2022/23 Kevin Thelwell

I’m baffled why people think Thelwell is the problem. He’s been with us 10 months , we’ve got a board who’ve been with us many years and overseen these disasters. They, the board, have shown little knowledge or competence that fits in with how a modern football club should be run. At least Thelwell has been out there with other clubs, in other countries seeing how proper clubs are run. For me , outside of the manger/ coaching staff , he’s the only one with real football knowledge.

Will we ever stop this merry go round of getting rid of DoF s and managers and plunging us into further crisis? Benitez not only got rid of Brands and his staff he also get rid of a number of people who had been at the club for many years and never replaced them . Behind the scenes we were a mess , Thelwell at least has started the process of replacing those people and creating a structure within the club . He even managed to get rid of the major log jam at Academy level that was David Unsworth.

Of course he needs to be held accountable, but he’s been working with one hand tied behind his back due to previous board level incompetence. We saw that in our scrabble to sell Richarlison our best player, and if you‘re desperate to sell because you need the money then you clearly don’t have the money to spend on transfers. That’s being shown again as we went cap in hand to Villa trying to get Ings on a loan as we have no money. What a way to run a club, and yet it’s somehow Thelwell’s fault.

As I said, I have no problem with Thelwell being held accountable, he should be judged on how successful his 26 appointmeets and his 120 point plan are, but at least give him time to get us out of this mess. All I ever see are knee jerk reactions , “ get rid” , with nobody having a clue as to what would be better. What we need is some stability and to follow the process being put in place not the constant shambolic changes we’ve got used to.
I agree with a lot of this sentiment. Listen the majority of damage proceeds his tenure. We allowed manager after manager to hastily do short-sided business, avoided selling our best players at peak value and generally bought at too high of prices in the market. I do think the board has learned a bit of the mistake of IMO not allowing Brands to really execute a competent DoF strategy. That's still grading on a massive curve.

Regardless be it the books restraints or intelligent frugality, the fact we are paying less for recruitment is a welcomed change. this extends prior to Thelwell but the Patterson, Myko Garner deals should have been the transfer approach for years. Stretching on Onana I thought was a worthy gamble considering the upside. We are buying younger and cheaper that should warrant reinvestment opportunities down the line. And then on the other side adding veterans relatively cheaply you can accept. All that in total may be enough to afford some room for mistakes like Maupay and McNeil.

The fact though is I still don't know his strengths are as a DoF. His knowledge of global markets seems slim and thats where real value is and the business the club would be wise to target. He was wise to finally sell Richy (something that likely should have been done prior to his time) and leverage an Alli loan. That said comparing him to others in the division he seems to be nothing more than a DoF. It's nice we have one now empowered but that isnt enough in its own.

The more concerning thing personally is the business he didn't do. I think he would have been wise to be more hardlined and turnover more. For starters the lack of Dom cover had precedent of being very dangerous and I think he judged poorly in more goals coming from the wings. He would have been wise to entertain Pickford offers for reinvestment. And most of all if the Gordon deal was 50 million thats grounds enough to void him the position personally. That's repeating prior madness and literally would have changed the entire conversation of signings. Instead weve replaced 1 to 1 positionally but with mostly rawer players and with an absence of goals. It's not hard see that that isnt enough. If it was a funds issue he should have garnered more funds.

But the failures of this club extend way past him. McNeil is not the reason we are in this mess, its really poor transfer policy and asset management window after window that are baring fruit now.

He's done what Steve Walsh done, he's got himself a Tesco bag and swanned off abroad for a few weeks to blag he's actually scouting some targets
Oh those heady days of window shopping in Milan. Now he's off to Brittany with a Tesco bag full of Monopoly money to try and sign a forward who has scored 6 goals in 41 appearances in League 1. No doubt we'll end up agreeing a 7 year deal where we have to part with 10 mil for each goal he scores.

Walsh's Wikipedia picture has sent me hahahhaha feel like it says so much without actually saying anything at all.

In theory, the current chaos at Everton ought to cement Thelwell’s role and his importance.

If Lampard’s future is uncertain (as it must surely be, regardless of your opinion on him), then that ought to further remove recruitment responsibility from the manager’s remit.

The DoF should be bridging the gap between the current manager and the next, filling the gaps in the squad that he recognises.

I’d say ‘we’ll see,’ but in reality we won’t. We won’t know who has sanctioned the deals, because we never do.

Will add while McNeil is massively underwhelming...he's 23, on low wages, and can be seen to be sold on in the future. He's not going to be difficult to maneuver if it doesn't pan out. He's not putting the club in a difficult position.

In comparison to 90% of the previous transfers where 25+ years of age and £100k a week flops have been the killer.

we might be able to move him on. I cannot understand why we brought him in in the first place. none of the attributes we needed when it was clear for all we needed quick, strong physically, tough characters. insane recruiting
