The McNeil deal reminds me of Aiden McGeady in some ways. I can see him spending the last few years of his contract on loan in the championship with us covering 90% of his wage, he'll then leave and never play at this level again.
100%. He's absolutely dirt and we'll ultimately end up paying his wages for years despite him not being in our Premier League squads. He's easily lower end Championship material - at best. Truly terrible signing.

Is he on low wages? Do we know that?

Also, who is going to pay even half of what we paid for him?

He looks out of his depth at this level, which means interested clubs are likely going to be clubs who will struggle to afford him. I think we are really going to struggle moving him on because I'm guessing he's on a good top flight level salary on a long term deal.

He'll be on an average PL wage. He's played 100+ top flight games for Burnley before 22. He has lots of scope to improve. Right now...no and he's been poor. But moving him on at some point won't be difficult as he's not on ridiculous wages. What we'd get for him...who knows. One year he could turn into James Rodriguez mark 2...who knows.

Bottom line is that compared to signings like Gomes, Mina, Allan, Sigurdson, Tosun etc where we've spent £30+mill and £100ks a week that we've struggled to shift, a signing like him is easier to manoeuvre.

We signed 8 players. 2 have been underwhelming, 1 hasn't had a chance yet (Garner), the other is a loan (Vinagre). The rest are 1st team regulars. You'll find it difficult to find another club in the league that have signed that many players that have all been superb.

Mistakes get made. The idea the original post made a point about is being able to fix that mistake which previously we couldn't.

I wouldn't be too sure on that. He's young and he could still improve to a level where he's a reasonable option for us, but if he doesn't then I can't see him being easy to move on. If he fails here he's effectively failed as a PL player after last season, and there won't be many teams outside the PL who pay the sort of wages we do. He might not be on the sort of crippling wages that others have drained from us, but he's likely to be getting paid enough to prevent a transfer to the majority of clubs who'd be interested in him.

Surely that's more a difference of opinion and he still offers more possible options compared to our previous transfers where we've stuck a rod in our back.

It's definitely a difference of opinion, but I don't agree that he will be easy to move on. Unless he massively improves, then no other PL club will be interested because he hasn't looked like he can perform at this level.

Low end PL or championship opponent scores a memorable goal against us in league or cup comp.. often results in their featuring highly in our ‘scouting’ department target list. Smacks of laziness and complacency. Lack of competition for these players is a regular feature too.

It’s an easy route to riches. Score against soft touch FC, set you up for life.

Well yeah, pretty much everything we say on here is opinion isn't it? Like I said, I just wouldn't be so sure that he'll be easy to move on.

Something's aren't though.

Gomes for £25mil and £100k a week we all agree was a) a bad buy and b) impossible to sell/move on for example.

McNeil - younger, room to improve, not as much as a wage burden. Could do either way.

There's more options with him compared to our previous transfers that we got stuck with.

I'd be surprised if we're stuck with McNeil for his full contract if he completely flops

Will add while McNeil is massively underwhelming...he's 23, on low wages, and can be seen to be sold on in the future. He's not going to be difficult to maneuver if it doesn't pan out. He's not putting the club in a difficult position.

In comparison to 90% of the previous transfers where 25+ years of age and £100k a week flops have been the killer.

As others have already said, I’d just like to add that I certainly don’t think he’ll be easy to move on. I think he’s a Championship level player and not many teams down there could realistically afford him. He’s not on low wages, he’s probably on about £60-70k a week. I can’t see a Premier League team wanting him for a transfer fee.
